Eddie Trunk to interview Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson this week
8:39AM EST | link | comments (18) |

Alex, Eddie and GeddyEddie Trunk on his Friday Night Rocks (airs on New York's Q104.3) radio show last night played Far Cry and mentioned that he would be interviewing Geddy and Alex this week. No word on when it will air though. Eddie Trunk has interviewed Geddy and Alex many times before. His VH1 Classic interview with them from late 2005 can be viewed here. He also interviewed Neil Peart for the first time last fall; you can watch that interview here. Thanks to reader GoingBald for the heads up.

Updates and other random Rush stuff
1:03PM EST | link | comments (55) |

UPDATE - 3/30@10:54PM: Power Windows is reporting that the DVD album release has been delayed one week to May 22nd.

Here are this week's site updates and random news from the world of Rushdom.

The number of registrations continues to grow - almost 400 confirmed users now. Remember - if you're having any issues with registering or logging in, don't hesitate to drop me a line. People also seem to be having way too much fun with the comment confirmation letters. :)

The ticketmaster presale is currently on for selected shows. See this post for details. From what I've read/heard so far people aren't having all that great of luck with it. A few have though. Regular ticket sales start tomorrow.

The Snakes & Arrows DVD album is now unavailable at Amazon presumably because they've run out of stock. It still seems to be available at Best Buy though.

Reader George R informs us that Neil Peart will grace the cover of the June 2007 issue of DRUM! magazine.

Several radio stations across North America are running Rush ticket promotions. Bay area station 1077 KSAN - The Bone is featuring Rush as artist of the week and if you call in when they play Rush you can win tickets (thanks NED07). Boston's 100.7 WZLX is running a contest this weekend to win Rush tickets (thanks leezgirl). Raleigh-Durham's 96 Rock is running a Rush'n Roulette ticket giveaway all this week. These are just a few of the promos - there are many more out there too I'm sure but these are the ones I'm currently aware of.

There are also several radio polls/contests/surveys underway across North America. Rush made it to the Sweet 16 in 97 Rock's March Bandness competition but lost to Lynryd Skynrd. Same deal for Lexington's 100.1 WKQQ's March Bandness; made it to the Sweet 16 but lost to Tom Petty (thanks John). Hamilton's Y108 ran a contest to determine the top 108 albums of all time and 4 Rush albums made the list; Moving Pictures - #19, A Farewell to Kings - #34, Signals - #42, and Permanent Waves - #57 (thanks Rich V). Toronto's Q107 is running a poll where they ask the question What concert are you most looking forward to this summer?. Rush is one of the 4 choices and are currently holding a commanding lead over Roger Waters, Genesis and The Police (thanks Lawrence).

I guess Rush is a Band also got a mention on a few stations last week I'm told; Toronto's Q107 (thanks Scott T), Vancouver's 100.3, the Q (thanks Shirley) and Ottawa's CHEZ106 even linked to the site (thanks kam). Cool.

XanaduRush has posted a bunch of great Rush bootlegs up on YouTube and reader Colin points us to this page which has several free Rush themes for Pocket PCs.

That's it for now. Have a great weekend.

Snakes & Arrows DVD album update
7:58AM EST | link | comments (66) |

UPDATE - 3/30@10:55PM: Power Windows is reporting that the DVD album release has been delayed one week to May 22nd.

It looks as if the Snakes & Arrows DVD album is no longer available at Amazon. Not only that, it doesn't show up at all - it just completely disappeared from the website. At this point I'm not sure what this means. I guess it's possible they ran out of their allotted inventory, but I really don't know. It is still available at Best Buy though (for a better price too).

The release of this new DVD album has sparked a lot of discussion on the various Rush messageboards and elsewhere. Since it's a new format, people obviously have a lot of questions and are naturally a bit skeptical. Many fans think it's a blatant money grab by the record company - mainly because it's not being released until 2 weeks after the regular CD... and they certainly have a point.

One of the big questions is will it play in my CD player?. And from what I understand the answer to that question is no. It's a DVD and therefore will only play in a DVD player. So if you want the full benefit of the 5.1 surround sound, you'll need the right equipment. However it will come with "pre-ripped" versions of the tracks - although the exact quality level is still an open question. A lot of people just don't like the idea of yet another format but, like this guy, will buy it anyways because of the inclusion of the video documentary on the making of the album. Money grab or not... I'm buying one. :)

Presale update
11:00AM EST | link | comments (93) |

Rush Snakes & Arrows TourUPDATE - 3/29@10:50PM: Reader Michael F just sent me info on the Raleigh presale. It's being sponsored by 96 Rock and the password is farcry.

UPDATE - 3/29@5:16PM: Reader DUSA-2772 informs us that German presale info is available via Rush.com at this link. Presale is from 9AM to 6PM local time on March 30th. For Mannheim call 0049-699443660; for Oberhausen call 0049-20882000. It looks like the presale for Italy may have already happened - the info on Rush.com is a little vague.

UPDATE - 3/29@4:34PM: Presale for the Pittsburgh Camden and Scranton shows is through 95.1 WZZO- details at this link. Thanks to Chad for the heads up.

UPDATE - 3/29@3:40PM: Details for the Phoenix 93.3 KDKB presale:

Rush Pre-Sale Information
93.3 KDKB is giving you access to tickets to see Rush before they go on-sale to the public ...... The Pre-Sale will be Friday this week ...... Only members of The Mob will have access. Not a member, click here. If you are a member, check back Friday morning for the link and the password.

Although sounds like we already have the link and password. :) Thanks to K.K.VanMalmsteen for the info.

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 3/29@1:25PM: It looks like the listed presales are radio-sponsored presales where you will need to get a password from the local station that's sponsoring it. So far I've heard that FarCry is the password for the Phoenix show and for Pittsburgh limelight. I'm unsure how accurate this info is. If you have any info regarding passwords and/or sponsoring stations, please send it my way or leave a comment. I'll update the post with any info I get.

UPDATE - 3/29@11:18AM: Reader mtb2112 notes that some Rush shows (currently Charlotte, Scranton, Phoenix, Bristow and Camden) are also showing up as American Express Gold Card events. This means that AmEx Gold Card holders have acces to some preferred seating via 1-800-NOW-AMEX or Ticketmaster Gold seating.

The first round of the Rush tour presale through MusicToday will end today at 12PM (local venue time). Some of the shows have already closed down their presale; namely Boston, Red Rocks and White River in WA. The UK presale ended last night at 9PM.

Ticketmaster will also be running a presale for select shows beginning tomorrow morning. Here are the venues conducting presales tomorrow with ticket links:

Jun. 20 - [presale Fri 09AM] Raleigh, NC @ Walnut Creek (password farcry 96 Rock)
Jun. 25 - [presale Fri 09AM] Pittsburgh, PA @ Post Gazette Pavillion (password LIMELIGHT 102.5 WDVE)
Jun. 29 - [presale Fri 10AM] Scranton PA @ Montage Mountain (95.1 WZZO)
Jul. 06 - [presale Fri 10AM] Camden, NJ @ Tweeter Center (95.1 WZZO)
Jul. 21 - [presale Fri 09AM] Portland, OR @ The Amphitheater at Clark County
Jul. 27 - [presale Fri 09AM] Phoenix, AZ @ Cricket Pavillion (password FarCry 93.3 KDKB)
Aug. 08 - [presale Fri 10AM] Morrison, CO @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre (103.5 The Fox)
Aug. 12 - [presale Fri 09AM] Selma, TX @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheater

The official on-sale date for all of the presale shows begins Saturday morning (check venue for specific time). The next round of presales will begin in a couple weeks - I'm guessing April 10th. I should have more info on that in the coming week.

Snakes & Arrows world premier radio special
10:05AM EST | link | comments (7) |

In the week prior to the release of Snakes & Arrows, FMQB Productions will be releasing a one-hour radio special featuring an interview with Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson titled Inside Rush: Snakes & Arrows. The show will air on select stations between April 27th and May 1st. Here are the details from the site:

"It's big, it's bold, and I think it's some of the best work we've done in years. I'm really pleased with the quality of the songs, and there's lots of playing on it," Geddy Lee recently told Revolver magazine. Of course, he was speaking of Rush's 18th studio album, Snakes & Arrows, due out on May 1.

In anticipation of the first new Rush music since 2002's Vapour Trails, FMQB Productions and Atlantic Records present Inside Rush: Snakes & Arrows. In this one-hour world premiere radio special, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson sit down with host Lou Brutus to discuss working with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Stone Sour, Shadows Fall), as the band spent five weeks recording in a remote woodland studio on a mountaintop in upstate New York. Inside Rush: Snakes & Arrows will take your listeners behind the scenes of those sessions, give insight to the band's new release and possibly offer up some details of what fans can expect on the upcoming world tour.

With over 40 million records sold, Rush boasts 23 gold, 14 platinum and 3 multi-platinum records, making them one of the best-selling rock bands in history. Only The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, KISS and Aerosmith have more consecutive gold and platinum albums by a rock band.

I'm sure there will be several band interviews prior to the release, but this is the first one to be confirmed. They are also rumored to be in talks for an appearance on RockLine the week of the release (see this post).

Mid-week updates
10:12AM EST | link | comments (79) |

Where to start? It's been another very hectic week in Rushland with the presale kickoff and news of the DVD album version of Snakes & Arrows. So I thought we could all take a collective deep breath and recap all of the latest happenings and go over some news that we missed.

Site Updates

I finally switched over to a registration-based commenting system on Sunday afternoon and it's been a big success so far; just a few minor glitches. We have around 300 people signed up already and I'll be taking your feedback and improving things as I get the time. Thanks for all your positive feedback. If you haven't registered yet, go here to do so.

For those of you who donated to the site - a BIG thank you is in order. My order of RUSH IS A BAND bumper stickers is on the way and I'll get one out to all of you as soon as I receive them (should be in the next week or two).

I've received a lot of feedback about doing something special with the site for the tour and I appreciate it. I'm throwing around some ideas in my head and will probably roll something out in the next few weeks; some kind of special Tour section.

Thanks for all the post comments - I try to read all of them but I don't necessarily have time to respond to them all. If you definitely need a response from me regarding something, using the contact form is a better bet. Speaking of which, I'm about 5 days behind on my email. So don't worry if you haven't gotten a response from me yet - I'm working on getting caught up.

Rush 2007 Tour Presale

Rush Snakes & Arrows TourThe first round of the presale for the Rush 2007 tour is underway. For the US dates it began yesterday at 10AM (local venue time) and runs through noon tomorrow - details in this post. For the UK, the presale began today at 9AM (UK time) and will run through 10PM tomorrow - details in this post. I managed to score some fairly decent seats for both the Cleveland and Pittsburgh shows - I hope you all had good luck too. The regular ticket sale begins this Saturday at 10AM for all the shows involved in the presale. The next big round of presale tickets will be in a couple weeks. I'll keep you posted.

Leela album cover verified

Snakes & ArrowsThe UK press release for Snakes & Arrows contains a link to a pdf of the Neil Peart essay that accompanies the album; The Game of Snakes and Arrows: Prize Every Time. It's a great essay and describes all the songs on the album in detail. Also - Neil Peart essentially confirms that the cover is the infamous Leela Board:

... When I told Alex and Geddy about the Leela connection, and showed them the gameboard painted by Harish Johari, they were as excited by all that serendipity as I was, and we agreed to use his painting for the cover. ...

Limited Edition DVD album version of Snakes & Arrows

The rumored DVD album version of Snakes & Arrows is a reality. The Rush preorder store store confirms it and Amazon and other sites have it up for preorder. At the time of this post Amazon has it ranked at #5 in sales (it actually peaked at #3)!

Rush is a Band presale and preorder promotion

As described in this post, Musictoday is running a presale and preorder promotion for Rush is a Band readers. To sign-up for the promotion simply send an email containing your Age, Full Name and Address to riabbiggestfanzz@aol.com. You can sign up anytime from now through April 30th. Three winners will be chosen and each winner will receive a prize pack containing the following:

  • Limited-Edition Rush T Shirt, ONLY available for purchase through the Musictoday Rush Online Advance Ticket Presale
  • A copy of Snakes & Arrows on CD

Far Cry shooting up the charts

Rush's single Far Cry is getting a lot of radio airplay on rock radio and is now at #5 on Mediabase's Mainstream Rock chart and still climbing fast.

Rumor Mill

The latest from the Rush rumor mill is that the band is shooting a video for Far Cry to be included on the DVD album. Again... just a rumor - I have no idea whether it's true or any other details at all. If true, I wonder if they'll try to get any airplay on VH1 or something? I could see them showing it on MuchMusic in Canada - definitely not MTV in the US though.

UK Snakes & Arrows press release with Neil Peart essay
9:35AM EST | link | comments (29) |

UPDATE - 3/27@12:47PM: I forgot to mention this before, but Neil also basically confirms in the essay that the album cover is indeed the Leela board.

I posted this UK press release for Snakes & Arrows in an update to this post yesterday but failed to notice that the release also included a link to a pdf of a Neil Peart essay; I'm assuming the one that Neil mentioned in his last website update. He talks about the recording of the album and all the inspiration behind the music and lyrics. He offers this interesting explanation behind the two short instrumentals Hope and Malignant Narcissism:

... In a single, inspired performance, Alex recorded his eclectic and poignant solo guitar piece, "Hope," which also has qualities of spirituality, and raw sophistication. He chose the title from the line in "Faithless," "I still cling to hope," and like that song, "Hope" is a kind of secular prayer.

Toward the end of the sessions, Geddy was playing with a fretless bass between vocal takes, just riffing aimlessly, and Booujze [Nick R.] was getting excited. He started recording some of those figures over the vocal mic, and fired us up with the idea of putting them together to create a short, quirky instrumental. This inspired the thirteenth track, for luck, "Malignant Narcissism" (an apt title for an instrumental with bass and drum solos, it came from Team America: World Police). For everyday use, that mouthful was soon abbreviated to "MalNar" (cue robot voice, "We are from the planet Malnar"). I had left a little four-piece drumset in the studio for Booujze to play around on, and I ended up recording "Malignant Narcissism" on that. Just for fun. ...

It's well worth the read. Thanks to the aptly named reader AnotherPairOfEyes for spotting this for us.

Rush is a Band Rush presale and preorder promotion
11:32PM EST | link | comments (146) |

Rush Snakes & Arrows TourAs we all should know by now the Rush advance ticket presale will be conducted through Musictoday and start tomorrow at 10AM local venue time. Musictoday has gratiously offered to run a Rush presale and preorder promotion for Rush is a Band readers. Before giving all the details of the promotion I thought I'd first recap the steps needed to be taken in order to register for the presale (in case you haven't yet) as well as go over the presale and preorder contest that was first alluded to in this post.

Presale Registration

In order to register for the presale you first need visit the Rush Presale Website, enter your email address in the box where it says Enter Email Address and click Sign me up. You will then receive an email from Tix@musictoday.com entitled Rush Fan Community Email Validation. After opening this email and visiting the validation link included within you will be taken back to the Rush Presale Website. At this point the registration for presale tickets is complete (although you will have to enter your email address again during a later step in the process to purchase tickets). However, as we discussed in this post, if you've never purchased anything at Musictoday.com you will also need to register as a new shopper using this url. This is where you will enter all your contact information as well as choose a password. Doing this up front will save you some time when you are purchasing tickets tomorrow. The complete itinerary of dates with presale ticket times can be found here.

Rush Presale and Preorder Contest Information

I first mentioned the presale and preorder contest a couple days ago but thought I'd go over it again:

All fans who purchase RUSH pre-sale TICKETS in addition to pre-ordering the CD OR pre-ordering the CD and tshirt combo will be entered into the Rush Snakes & Arrows Contest!!!

5 Grand Prize winners will receive a hard cover tour book comprising every Rush tour program from 1977-2004. The book will be personally autographed to the winners by the band. In addition, each of these 5 winners will receive a Meet-and-Greet opportunity for the winner and one guest in the city where tickets were purchased.

First prize winners will receive a Meet-and-Greet opportunity for the winner and one guest in the city where tickets were purchased. Every city will have one meet and greet winner!

Rush is a Band presale and preorder promotion

UPDATE - 3/26@8:05PM: Oh yeah... for those of you who are currently logged in, an easier solution is to just go to my account and change your password now. Then you won't have to do the forgot password thing.

Sorry guys... I screwed up and accidentally reset everybody's password; things are a little hectic right now. Anyways, if you've already registered - next time you login your password won't work. What you need to do is go to the forgot password page, enter your email and you'll get sent a new password. Again- very sorry about this. And if you have any problems or don't understand what you need to do don't hesitate to shoot me an email.

Rush tour tickets pre-sale
4:39PM EST | link | comments (34) |

Rush Snakes & Arrows TourUPDATE - 3/26@7:14PM: All the pre-sale dates are now up on the musictoday.com site here. They also have info up in the pre-order store about the contest I alluded to in this post.

I know there's a lot of confusion over the pre-sale signup thing - I'm trying to clear things up and will let you know as I learn more. But for now I'm just gonna add to the confusion. :)

A couple days ago, my contact at musictoday.com told me the following:

As you'll notice on the Rush presale ticketing site, fans must register their email address at the site and then validate their email address by clicking through a link emailed to the address that they registered on the presale site. This can be done anytime prior to the presale, but is required before fans can purchase presale tickets. This email validation process does NOT sign the fans up for any email list - it just validates the fan as a customer within our ticketing system and allows us to contact them for customer service issues only.

So I think most of us have at least done this bit without too much confusion. But then I saw jediyyz's comments in my earlier post and also see this post at Counterparts from Emster2112:

I went in to take a look around an familiarize myself with the presale website and I thought I was all signed up and good to go. I went to sign in and Music Today's presale pages kept telling me I wasn't registered. If you haven't shopped through Music Today before, you need to navigate through and register with all of your contact info to be truly registered. This should be the correct url: link

You register over to the right where it says "NEW SHOPPERS If you've never shopped here before, click here to register"

So there you go. I just did this and had no problems. Of course, nothing is yet available for purchase. Just make sure you register and be ready at 10AM EST local venue time tomorrow!

Another Snakes & Arrows review
1:28PM EST | link | comments (42) |

This latest review of Snakes & Arrows is a doozy; very long and very detailed; much more so than the last one. Oh my ... this album sounds like it's going to kick some major ass. You'll definitely want to read the whole thing, but here's the summary:

... 'Snakes & Arrows' is a powerful album which in striving to be contemporary is possibly a little heavier and a touch more cluttered than it needed to be. Neil Peart's heartfelt lyrics are impressive throughout, and Geddy Lee's vocals suggest a new maturity. Above all the band find room to jam out enthusiastically, but in occasionally over egging the arrangements and sometimes falling in between the Prog Rock, Space Rock and melodic Metal genres, 'Snakes & Arrows' might be a CD that seeks to consolidate rather than break new ground.

Thanks to reader deraxeman for the heads up.

Official Tour Dates!!

Rush Snakes & Arrows TourUPDATE - 3/26@2:18PM: Press release for the UK album and tour here.

UPDATE - 3/26@1:19PM: Just got this from one of the Rushcon organizers:

Just wanted to let you know with the tour dates announced, we at
RushCon are working hard to figure out the best dates and events for all of our RUSH friends.

We have to firm up the details with our venues before announcing the dates, but we expect to have that figured out within a week, hopefully sooner.

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 3/26@11:54AM: Reader Bruce sends us this heads up regarding the Saratoga, NY show:

FYI, Saratoga tickets are currently on-sale to Saratoga Performing Arts Center members, with a password. Not sure how quickly people can get the password by joining, but an individual membership is $70 at this link ...

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 3/26@10:42AM: The official press release (not press conference *wink*) with the complete tour itinerary is out too. You can check it out on the prnewswire here.

I've finally gotten a chance to digest some of these dates and wanted to note a few observations I've made:

- Rush will be playing Finland for the first time ever and Norway for the first time since 1979
- Rush will be playing in London, ON for the first time since 1981
- Since the Toronto date falls on a Wednesday there is now some question as to the timing of Rushcon 2007
- I'm going to have a hard time deciding which dates to hit
- Rush rules

----- snip -----

The official list of tour dates are up at Rush.com! Rush pulled another midnight surprise on us. Pre-sale will begin at 10AM tomorrow and run through 12PM on Thursday, March 29th. It looks like we already had all the June dates. Added to July was a Northwest swing through Calgary, Seattle and Portland then onto the Hollywood Bowl. There are several new dates in August including Salt Lake City and a swing through the heartland - also the Dallas date actually is on the 11th rather than on the 17th. For September, the Milwaukee date is actually on the 6th instead of the 7th and added are several more Canadian dates including Quebec City, Ottawa and - of course - Toronto. October includes all the European dates and - as I suspected - my UK dates except for Glasgow and Newcastle had been wrong but my German dates were right. Added were Milan, Oslo, Stockholm and Helsinki. So a total of 62 dates and 60 cities. I'll be updating the Time Stand Still calender as soon as I get a chance, and talking more about the pre-sale which begins tomorrow at 10AM. Official tour date announcement and pre-sale contest
9:15AM EST | link | comments (139) |

UPDATE - 3/25@10:07PM: I'm hearing that there will be around 60 dates announced tomorrow, with 30 or so being offered up for pre-sale on Tuesday. I would assume that these 60 dates include the European leg - which would make this tour comparable to R30 in length.

UPDATE - 3/25@11:57AM: And another one! They seem to be rolling in again. Milwaukee, WI at the Marcus Amphitheater on September 7th.

UPDATE - 3/25@11:53AM: Another Cali date; reader david informs us that Rush will play the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA on August 1st.

UPDATE - 3/24@10:24PM: It sounds like Chicago's 97.9 WLUP just announced that Rush will be at the Midwest Bank Amphitheater in Tinley Park on September 8th. Thanks to reader jeff for the heads up.

It's official now; as I reported Wednesday, Rush will announce their 2007 summer tour dates this coming Monday, March 26th. Rush revealed this information via their website late last night in addition to sending out a message to their email list. I'd also told you that pre-sales would begin March 27th and be conducted through musictoday.com, who now has a page up on their site where you can sign up for the pre-sale. I mentioned this yesterday, but now it seems that they also have information up regarding a contest for those who purchase pre-sale tickets and order the Snakes & Arrows cd through their site. Here are the contest details from the website:

All fans who purchase RUSH pre-sale TICKETS in addition to pre-ordering the CD OR pre-ordering the CD / tshirt combo will be entered into the Rush Snakes & Arrows Contest!!!

For more information on this contest, please click here.

I can't find any other mention of this CD/t-shirt pre-order combo thing on the site, but it seems like once tickets go on pre-sale you'll be able to purchase the combo along with your tickets, which will enter you in the contest.

I've also heard that European dates will be announced on Tuesday - the day after the North American dates, with pre-sale information shortly after.

With all that said, here is my latest list of (incomplete, unconfirmed) tour dates:

Jun. 13 - Atlanta, GA @ HiFi Buys Amphitheater

Snakes & Arrows to debut new DVD Album format!?
7:41PM EST | link | comments (38) |

Last Saturday I posted about some rumors speculating that Snakes & Arrows would be released as some kind of Enhanced CD possible in 5.1 Surround Sound and/or with some kind of making of CD (Alex Lifeson had mentioned in an interview that the recording process had been filmed). The rumors were prompted by the listing of the CD on several vendor sites as a CD+DVD format. Well ... Power Windows has some new and exciting information regarding these rumors. From Power Windows:

Although nothing has been officially announced, exciting rumors are surfacing regarding the new album! The latest rumor is that besides the standard cd format, Snakes & Arrows, along with the new Linkin Park album, will be the first albums released on Warner Music's new "DVD Album" format. This format will be a 25,000 copy limited edition, and will include a special 26 page booklet.

Announced by Warner Music last August, in an age where fans will spend $3.00 to buy a ring tone but won't spend $12 to buy a cd, record companies are trying to find new ways to entice fans to buy the album. Not to be confused with the DualDisc format, this will be a fully interactive DVD, and will include the album in 5.1 surround sound, as well as a ~43 minute "making of" video, cel-phone ringtones, wallpapers, text, and other digital extras that can only be accessed via computer, including the ability to extract the album tracks onto the users computer for use in mp3 players, etc. The limited edition will retail in the area of $24, while the cd version will be around $12.

The downside is, the limited edition may not be ready in time for the pre-announced May 1st release date. Accordingly, WEA is kicking around keeing the cd release on May 1st while releasing the special edition it two weeks later (as some online retailers currently have it listed). The other option is to delay the release of both editions until May 15th, so fans who can't wait do not feel obligated to buy the cd version first, followed by the limited edition two weeks later. WEA would like to avoid this second option, however, as this is the same release date as the new Linkin Park album and would thus compete for sales. More details to follow.

Updates and other random Rush stuff
12:29PM EST | link | comments (59) |

UPDATE - 3/23@1:25PM: Now these ones are new. ;) Irvine, CA at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater on July 25th with tickets on sale April 14th. I'm also hearing that they'll play in Mountanview, CA at the Shoreline Amphitheater around the same time - but no firm date yet. More as I get them ...

UPDATE - 3/23@1:09PM: I'm confusing myself here... already had those Florida dates up. :) Move along ... nothing to see here.

UPDATE - 3/23@12:49PM: Florida dates! West Palm Beach, FL at the Sound Advice Amphitheater on June 15th and Tampa Bay, FL at the Ford Amphitheatre on June 16th. Here's this link with details. Thanks Sean!

First off, there's a LOT of stuff going on today. As mentioned in this previous post the official, Rush-sponsored pre-sale signup form is now up at musictoday.com at this link. I just successfully signed up.

Also, regarding the press conference mentioned in this post from a couple days ago; it's actually a press release. Many thanks to Power Windows for clearing this up via his contacts at Anthem. Sorry about the confusion. My source probably just misheard or misinterpreted the info.

I've updated the latest tour dates post with several new dates: San Diego on July 30th, Virgina Beach on June 22nd, possible UK dates (still a little fuzzy), Camden on July 6th and Selma, TX on August 12th.

The Snakes & Arrows track list with track times has been revealed and it indeed looks like there'll be 3 instumentals. Not only that, the first review is in.

As far as the sight itself goes, I'll finally be switching over to a sign-up based commenting system due to rampant troll abuse. Details will be forthcoming. If you want me to reserve a username for you - shoot me an email, as many have done already.

Onto some more random Rush tidbits:

Rush's Far Cry has been featured on the main page of Mediabase's All Access music site all this week under the Mainstream Rock banner. The song debuted at #13 this past Monday and just today broke into the top 10!

Reader Scott alerted me to a press release that was put out by Atlantic records on Wednesday. It was posted to MelodicRock.com. Here it is:

5 Things You May Not Know About Rush
1. The Canadian power trio have sold MORE records in the U.S. than The Police, The Who, The Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Kiss, Paul Simon, R.E.M....do I really need to go on here, people? (source RIAA.com)
2. Rush was named "Group of the Millennium" by the Harvard National Lampoon (and Harvard kids are WICKED smart).
3. Rush has 2 annual, international fan conventions (RushCon and EuCon). Highly doubtful we'll see BritneyCon or J-LoFest anytime soon.
4. ***The New Rush album Snakes + Arrows hits stores May 1ST!!!*** (#4 is always reserved for shameless promotion).
5. We conducted an empirically-extensive, painstakingly-performed, no-one-held-at-gunpoint poll, backed by science, reason, logic and one thunderous drumbeat, the result of which demonstrated without question or doubt that Rush Rules (...ah, you knew that one already).
Rush - Snakes + Arrows - Release Date May 1, 2007.

Reader Rick M spoke with the assistant producer of RockLine and it looks like RockLine will have a Rush Special show the week of the album release - probably the day after, which would mean May 2nd.

The latest issue of Wine Spectator (April 30th) has an interview with Alex Lifeson. The entire interview is only available to paid subscribers. Thanks to Power Windows for the heads up.

Broadcast Newsroom has a nice little article up on their website titled Rush Mixes New Album Snakes & Arrows at Ocean Way. Here's an interesting excerpt:

... Snakes & Arrows was recorded with Grammy Award-winner Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver) and Rush co-producing, and mixed by engineer Rich Chycki in Ocean Way's Studio D on the Neve 88R console, where the band took full advantage of one of the world's largest collection of vintage outboard gear. ...

Interesting. It also has a much clearer image of the guys in the studio than this one.

Geddy Lee has donated his signature Fender Jazz Bass signed by Rush for an auction to benefit the Steven Hoffman Fund. There will also be a benefit concert in New York City on May 18 that Rush was invited to but is unlikely to attend. The late Steven Hoffman was a music manager that had worked with Rush in the past.

Reader D located this article on Geddy Lee's nephew Rob Higgins - singer-bassist for Dearly Beloved.

Reader Bill A let me know that his local station, 96.1 WBBB, has Far Cry at #1 this week and has Rush listed as the #1 Canadian rocker on their Top 8 Canadian Rockers list.

Reader batperez let me know that Utah's KBER 101.1 is holding a Pinewood Derby on April 7th. This adult derby has a grand prize consisting of the winner being flown by Atlantic Records to watch Rush in concert. No date or location for the concert has been given yet though. Details can be found on the station's website here.

Bob let me know that Moving Pictures was featured as the album of the day at AllMusic.com this past Tuesday.

German reader Alex let me know that Far Cry is finally available for download on German iTunes and on MusicLoad.

Snakes & Arrows review
11:18AM EST | link | comments (41) |

The very first review of Snakes & Arrows has appeared. It's from UK music journalist Dave Ling and it's a good one:

Friday 23rd March
Yesterday afternoon was occupied by a playback of Rush's new album. Given the paranoia that exists about downloading, this was the UK media's only chance to hear 'Snakes & Arrows' before its release date of April 30. I'd been dying to hear it, unlike the representative of Kerrang! that read a book for pretty much the entire 63 minutes, disappeared for a piss halfway through and f**ked off before the last song ended. Okay, I know Rush's current standing at K! Towers probably lies somewhere beneath Panic! At The Disco, Job For A Cowboy or Aiden - altogether... WHO?! - but I admit, this person's disprespect shocked me, especially as Pegi Cecconi from the Rush office was in the room at the time.
Anyway, 'Snakes & Arrows' is a vast improvement upon the Canadian trio's last album. I'll be frank, 2002's 'Vapor Trails' did very little for me. This time the band have gone heavier (very heavy in places!), with guitarist Alex Lifeson being let off the leash. Opening track (and first single) 'Far Cry' is probably the best song, being reminiscent of the band's 'Permanent Waves' album. But generally speaking, it's extremely strong throughout. Hugh Syme's artwork is excellent as ever, visualising a theme that seems to run through some of the songs; the elements. 'Spindrift', for instance, uses pounding instrumental parts to re-create waves crashing in on the western shore. 'The Larger Bowl (A Pantoum)', meanwhile, picks up where the 'Hemispheres'-era track 'Circumstances' left off with its couplet of: "Some of us live in a cloud of fear/Some live behind iron gates". In the vaguest possible way, Rush also pay lip service to the differences between the Middle East and Middle West in 'The Way The Wind Blows', which features the telling line of "Pray... and pass the ammunition" and a great solo from Lifeson. The best compliment that you could pay Peart's words is that they're thoughtful without being stuffy. The album, too, is heavy, but falls short of being one dimensional. You're gonna like it, I'm sure.

Comments temporarily disabled; the trolls come out at night
11:41PM EST | link | comments (24) |

UPDATE - 3/23@8:15AM: Comments are back up for the time being. I'm setting up the user registration for comments as we speak. If you want me to reserve a specific username/email combination, shoot me an email. I'll give the regular users first dibs.

I hate to have to do this, but I'm going to have to disable commenting on the site probably until tomorrow morning. The last few nights the comments have been hijacked by a few poor souls who have nothing better to do at 3 in the morning than post 100s of incoherent comments to the site. I'm also announcing that I'll be moving to a simple registration system for posting comments in the very near future. I think it's really my only option at this point. I can't say I'm surprised that it came to this - I had just been hoping I could put it off a bit longer because there are so many other neat things I want to do with the site. This will actually be a very good thing; we'll no longer have to worry about people impersonating one another or having multiple Shanes or Ds roaming around the comments. :) Again, this is only temporary - commenting will be turned back on by 9AM EST or so.

Will the real Snakes & Arrows album cover please stand up?
4:23PM EST | link | comments (52) |

UPDATE - 3/23@10:20AM: Hmm... reader Keith C just noticed that Amazon US is using the Leela board cover now. Not sure if that clears anything up - but there you have it!

Power Windows just posted this German Snakes & Arrows press release over at Counterparts. It contains a few high-res images. One is a new promo pic. One is the Far Cry cover art that we've become familiar with. And one is the infamous Game Board album art that was released with the album sell sheet. Conspicuously missing is the Desert Highway album art that we were led to believe was the real album cover. So which one is it? Will the European release have a different cover than the North American one? Is there something else going on? Is Rush f**king with us? :)

Snakes & Arrows track times, 3 instrumentals
2:12PM EST | link | comments (64) |

Reader Don noticed that this German website lists not only the tracks from Snakes & Arrows but also the track times. It also seems to corroborate what we've heard before about there being 3 instrumentals; namely The Main Monkey Business, Hope and Malignant Narcissism. However Hope and Malignant Narcissism are pretty short (just over 2 minutes each). My source had told me that there were not 3 - only 2. Oh well. I'm very cool with being wrong on this one. :)

It's also interesting to note that this site along with several other European sites (like this one and this one) list the album as being released on April 27th. Maybe they get first dibs? Anyways, here's the track list with song lengths:

1. Far Cry (Album Version) 05:21
2. Armor And Sword (Album Version) 06:36
3. Workin' Them Angels (Album Version) 04:47
4. The Larger Bowl (Album Version) 04:07
5. Spindrift (Album Version) 05:24
6. The Main Monkey Business (Instrumental) 06:01
7. The Way The Wind Blows (Album Version) 06:28
8. Hope (Instrumental) 02:02
9. Faithless (Album Version) 05:31
10. Bravest Face (Album Version) 05:12
11. Good News First (Album Version) 04:51
12. Malignant Narcissism (Instrumental) 02:17
13. We Hold On (Album Version) 04:13

My source probably just misheard or misinterpreted the info. The dates and pre-release info definitely seem legit though. Again- sorry.

UPDATE - 3/23@9:33AM: New date! Reader david alerted me that livenation.com is listing a date in Selma, TX at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater on August 12th.

UPDATE - 3/22@7:05PM: It looks like Wembly on the 12th is out ... since Donny Osmond already seems to be booked for that date (thanks Pete). Unless of course, he's opening for Rush (or vice versa). :) The Birmingham date is also questionable, but I'll leave it up for now. Sorry guys - these UK dates seem to be very difficult to get a handle on. Seems like I hear something different every day.

UPDATE - 3/22@3:04PM: ... And another. They seem to be rolling in at a good pace today. Reader Bruce strikes again; Tweeter Center at the Waterfront in Camden, NJ on July 6th.

UPDATE - 3/22@1:37PM: UK Dates! We've known for some time now that Rush is set to play Glasgow and Newcastle on October 3rd and 5th respectively but there's been some question as to the other UK tour stops. I've now received information that Rush will play in Manchester at the MEN Arena on October 7th; Birmingham at the NEC Arena on October 9th; and the Wembly Arena in London on October 12th.

UPDATE - 3/22@10:44AM: ... And another one from Bruce; Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Virginia Beach on June 22.

UPDATE - 3/22@10:03AM: Got another date from reader Bruce; San Diego, CA at the Coors Amphitheatre on July 30th.

If you read the updates to yesterday's post then you already know this; but I've heard from a reliable source (sorry - can't reveal who) that Rush will be making the official announcement of tour dates this coming Monday, March 26th. I've also heard that they'll announce the dates via a press conference in New York City. And no - I don't know any details beyond that. Warner Music Group, who owns Atlantic Records (Rush's US record company) is based in New York - if that means anything. Maybe they'll be announcing the dates there? I really don't care where they announce them - I just want the dates! Personally I hope I'm completely wrong on this and they instead release the dates sooner. If so, I will gladly eat my virtual hat. :)

I've also obtained information that pre-sales will begin next Tuesday, March 27th for selected cities and that musictoday.com will conduct the pre-sale similar to how it was done in 2004. This is to say that they'll email info (a url and password) out to their email list which you can signup for at Rush.net. I didn't participate in the pre-sale on the last tour, so I'm just going by what others have told me. So please share any info you have about the pre-sale in the comments.

And for the sake of completeness, here's the most current (incomplete, unconfirmed) list of dates:

Tour Date Update; Ohio, Phoenix, Montreal and more
12:45PM EST | link | comments (108) |

UPDATE - 3/20@10:49PM: First off, for those of you wondering how to get on the Rush mailing list, just go to this link on Rush.net. I'm sure if there's pre-sale info to get out to fans, that's how they'll do it. I also have information that the official announcement on dates will occur on Monday the 26th at a Press Conference in NYC. So we have another 5 days or so to wait. My guess is that a good number of the dates will leak out before then though. It also looks like Anthem has instructed the ticket sites to pull their dates until the official announcement so don't worry about the dates being yanked from ticketmaster.com. Keep in mind that the list below is incomplete. Rush had said they'd be hitting 48 cities - my list only has 30.

UPDATE - 3/20@4:06PM: I have a date for the Noblesville, IN show at the Verizon Wireless Music Center; August 26th. I should also have a date for the Chicago show at Tinley Park soon.

UPDATE - 3/20@1:52PM: Pre-sale info! I've received word that pre-sales will begin next Tuesday, March 27th for selected cities and that musictoday.com will conduct the pre-sale similar to how it was done in 2004. Unfortunatlely, I didn't participate in the pre-sale last tour so I'm not completely sure what this means - I'm just reporting what I've heard. I've also received confirmation from a few different sources that the show in Dallas at the Smirnoff Center will take place on August 17th rather than August 10th.

In lieu of any official updates from Rush.com I thought I'd bring my updated list of unconfirmed/semi-confirmed/rumored tour dates to the top of the fold once again. Since my last update we've learned of the following new dates; Montreal on September 15th, Phoenix on July 27th (displacing the Salt Lake City show), Raleigh on June 18th, Columbus on September 2nd and - good news for me - Cleveland on August 30th. It also looks like the Homdel, NJ show will be on July 8th rather than the 7th. Shows that have been showing up on various ticket sites listing an on-sale date of March 31st include Bristow, VA; Scranton, PA; Saratoga Springs, NY; Darien Lake, NY; Homdel, NJ; Phoenix, AZ; Red Rocks in Colorado; and Pittsburgh, PA. Rumored locations without dates yet include Nobelsville, IN and Tinley Park, Illinois. As always, if you here any more news let me know. Many thanks to everyone who's been sending me updates. Here's the updated list:

Jun. 13 - Atlanta, GA @ HiFi Buys Amphitheater
Jun. 15 - West Palm Beach, FL @ Sound Advice Amphitheater
Jun. 16 - Tampa, FL @ Ford Amphitheater @ Florida State Fairgrounds
Jun. 18 - Raleigh, NC @ Walnut Creek
Jun. 19 - Charlotte, NC @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheater
Jun. 22 - Virginia Beach @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre
Jun. 23 - Bristow, VA @ Nissan Pavillion
Jun. 25 - Pittsburgh, PA @ Post Gazette Pavillion
Jun. 27 - Mansfield, MA @ Tweeter Center
Jun. 29 - Scranton PA @ Montage Mountain
Jun. 30 - Saratoga Springs, NY @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center
Jul. 02 - Wantagh, NY @ Jones Beach Amphitheater

NeilPeart.net News Update
10:58PM EST | link | comments (48) |

Top Secret drum shells[NEWS, WEATHER, and SPORTS - March 20, 2007: The Count of Words]

So I leave my computer for a few hours and Neil Peart goes and decides to update the News page on his website. How thoughtless. :)

As always, his prose is witty, insightful, informative and entertaining. He discusses the writing of the essay to accompany the release of Snakes & Arrows and reveals that it won't accompany the album itself but will instead be released on the Rush.com website after the album releases. He also brings up the topic of his MySpace page, how it came about, what he thinks about it and the extent of his involvement. He then goes on to describe a recent motorcycle trip in the Santa Monica Mountains which included Michael (head of Rush security and the infamous SPQR on MySpace), Motorcyclist editor Brian Catterson and guitarist John Wesley from Porcupine Tree. Pictures from this trip were posted on both Michael's and Neil's MySpace sites, and I also put up some of the pics in a post over the weekend. We also learn that an article that Neil had written for Motorcyclist about his favorite motorcycle destinations on the R30 tour will be appearing in their May issue, along with excerpts from Roadshow. Neil also mentions that he'll be heading to Toronto in a couple of weeks to start rehearsing for the tour. And he saves the best for last:

... In closing, here's a top secret spy photo of the new drumset DW is building for me to play on the upcoming tour. It incorporates several technical innovations developed by John Good since he designed the tobacco sunburst recording kit I used on Snakes and Arrows (formerly the "West Coast" kit, originally built for Matt Scannell's sessions early last summer). Many people have described those drums as the "best they've ever heard," but the new ones are going to be even better.

So far it's just a stack of bare shells, as you can see, but even they sound amazing when John strikes them in his special "timbre-matching" way.

As for the finish and hardware, that's going to be a surprise. I'll only say, "Black is the new gold," and "Red is the new black." ...

Far Cry debuts at #13 on the mainstream rock charts
3:04PM EST | link | comments (70) |

Mediabase is one of the two primary music monitoring services that tracks radio airplay. They began charting Far Cry today for the week of March 12th through the 18th and it's broken into the mainstream rock charts at #13. It's also way out ahead of the pack with regards to new spins and new stations. Thanks to reader Rushguy for this great news.

Tour Dates open thread
2:47PM EST | link | comments (35) |

UPDATE - 3/20@11:17AM: Good news for me. Ohio dates! Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls (just south of Cleveland), OH on August 30th (tix on sale March 31st); and Germain Amphitheater in Columbus, OH on September 2nd. They'll also be playing at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Nobelsville, IN but no date yet. Yippee!

UPDATE - 3/20@7:11AM: Well, another Monday has gone by without any official announcement of tour dates. At this point it's anybody's guess when that'll happen. As of right now, about seven of these dates seem very firm and have ticketss listed as going on sale on March 31st at the various ticket outlet sites. Also, one minor change to report. Reader Digital Rush Experience let me know that BuySellTix.com is listing the Homdel, NJ show as occuring on July 8th rather than July 7th.

UPDATE - 3/19@4:54PM: Sean also tells me that the Raleigh, NC show at Walnut Creek that I mentioned last week is on for June 18th, replacing the Atlanta show that had originally been scheduled for that date and is now the opener.

UPDATE - 3/19@4:41PM: Reader Sean just gave me some information that's cleared up a rumor I've been hearing about the Salt Lake City date. I had a date of July 27th for Salt Lake City that I added a few days ago but it's looking like that date isn't accurate. I'd heard rumblings that they would actually be playing Phoenix on that date. The rumblings turned out to be true. Rush will be playing the Cricket Pavillion in Phoenix, AZ on Friday, July 27 at 8PM. In other news... I am now prepared to call Florida for George Bush. ;)

UPDATE - 3/19@4:09PM: Reader Patrick from Holland just informed me that he's heard Rush will play the Bell Centre in Montreal on September 15th. If they mirror the R30 tour at all, then this'd mean that a Toronto date would be next - then on to Europe. This'd fit right in with the early October UK dates we've heard. For you Chicago-area Rush fans - I've also heard that they'll be playing the First Midwest Bank Ampitheatre in Tinley Park, Illinois but I don't have a date yet.

We are all anxiously awaiting some sort of official announcement from Rush regarding tour dates. So I thought I'd open up a thread in the hopes that we'll have something to talk about soon. In the meantime, I've heard of a couple more dates to add to my partial list of rumored and unconfirmed dates. Ticketmaster is now reporting a show at the Nissan Pavillion in Bristow, VA for Saturday, June 23rd at 7:30PM - no ticket sale date given. Reader Dean also has informed me that Rush is set to play the Post Gazette Pavillion in Pittsburgh, PA on June 25th with tickets going on sale March 31st. Here's the updated list of as yet unconfirmed (although a few of these seem pretty solid now) dates. Hopefully we'll have them all very soon:

Jun. 13 - Atlanta, GA @ HiFi Buys Amphitheater
Jun. 15 - West Palm Beach, FL @ Sound Advice Amphitheater
Jun. 16 - Tampa, FL @ Ford Amphitheater @ Florida State Fairgrounds
Jun. 18 - Raleigh, NC @ Walnut Creek
Jun. 19 - Charlotte, NC @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheater
Jun. 23 - Bristow, VA @ Nissan Pavillion
Jun. 25 - Pittsburgh, PA @ Post Gazette Pavillion

Jun. 29 - Scranton PA @ Montage Mountain
Jun. 30 - Saratoga Springs, NY @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center

Jul. 04 - Darien Lake, NY @ Six Flags
Jul. 07 - Homdel, NJ @ PNC Arts Center
Jul. 08 - Homdel, NJ @ PNC Arts Center
Jul. 09 - Uncasville, CT @ Mohegan Sun Arena
Jul. 27 - Salt Lake City, UT @ Usana Amphitheater
Jul. 27 - Phoenix, AZ @ Cricket Pavillion
Jul. 28 - Las Vegas, NV @ MGM Grand Garden Arena

Rush on the radio
11:12AM EST | link | comments (96) |

UPDATE - 3/19@2:59PM: I added a few more stations to the list below but I think I'll stop now. The ratings are updated on a regular basis and unfortunately there's no way to search for a specific song. That's not really important. What's cool is that Far Cry is being spun regularly at stations across the country and is being very well-received. And here's the really good news; Mediabase began charting Far Cry (for March 12-18) today and it's broken into the mainstream rock charts at #13. And it's way out ahead of the pack with regards to new spins and new stations. Thanks to reader Rushguy for this news.

UPDATE - 3/19@8:19AM: Showdonttell25 also just compiled this list of stations and their ranking of Far Cry (as of early this morning). These are all the stations that have the song ranked. It's really nice to see that it's ranked number one at eight stations. I'm also glad to see Cleveland's WMMS (the station that helped Rush to break out in the US) on this list - as well as my favorite station to listen to in college - WONE 97.5 out of Akron.

101.5 WQUT - Knoxville, TN #1
93.1 WHLK - Madison, WI #1
105.5 WDHA - Morristown, NJ #1
95.5 KLOS - Los Angles, CA #1
106.5 WPYX - Albany/Schenectady/Troy, NY #1
97.9 WLUP - Chicago, IL #1
92.3 KGON - Portland, OR #1
96.3 WLVQ - Columbus, OH #1
98.9 KKZX - Spokane, WA #2

101.1 KBER - Salt Lake City/Ogden/Provo, UT #5
94.7 KSHE - St. Louis, MO #7
98.9 KQRC - Kansas City, MO-KS #7
97.5 WONE - Akron, OH #8
97.5 KMOD - Tulsa, OK #10
100.7 WMMS - Cleveland, OH #13
106.9 WCCC - Hartford/New Britain/Middletown, CT #14
102.5 KZOK - Seattle - Tacoma, WA #16
103.7 KRZR - Fresno, CA #19
101 WRIF - Detroit, MI #20
94.9 KHTB - Salt Lake City/Ogden/Provo, UT #22
107.7 KSAN - San Francisco, CA #23
96.3 WROV - Roanoke/Lynchburg, VA #32
104.3 WAXQ - New York, NY #571

----- snip -----

Showdonttell25 at Counterparts found this neat site which allows you to view which radio stations Rush is playing on; right down to the song title and time it aired, and with a ranking system too. It's updated in real time (sort of) and includes links to audio streams. The rankings are based on the number of times a song is played as well as user votes. It's a good way to track which stations are playing Far Cry, which seems to be ranked very well at the stations that are playing it. Check it out if you get a chance.

Saturday Updates; new Neil pics, S&A DualDisc?, individual concert DVDs and more
11:20AM EST | link | comments (42) |

I woke up this morning with several news items to report. With news pouring in at this rate I'm finding that it works better just to lump things all into one post sometimes rather than several smaller posts ... which is what I've done here. Lots of neat stuff to report. By the way ... Happy St. Patrick's Day! :)

Recent Neil Peart pics up at mySpace

If you've read Neil Peart's recent book Roadshow then you no doubt are familiar with Michael; Neil's riding partner, head of Rush security and the infamous SPQR on the top of the list of Neil Peart's mySpace friends. He also seems to be the one responsible for Neil's increased online presence of late. He recently posted several pics of himself, Neil and other miscellaneous Rush-friends on his mySpace page here. For those who don't have a mySpace account, I've posted a few of the pics.

Snakes & Arrows released as DualDisc?

Reader Patrick R emailed yesterday and pointed me to this listing for Snakes & Arrows on CDUniverse.com. It's a listing for a (CD+DVD)CD version of the album - same cost as the regular version. This type of designation usually means it's an Enhanced CD or Dual Disc of some kind. This leads one to speculate that they may include the entire album in a higher-quality stereophonic and/or surround sound. Another possibility is the inclusion of some kind of making of DVD as referenced by Alex Lifeson in this interview. There's a lot connecting-of-the-dots going on here based on one listing at CDUniverse, but I thought it was worth a mention. That and the fact that Power Windows has also heard the same rumor.

Rush concert videos to be released individually?

Last June Rush released their 3 concert videos in one DVD set titled Rush Replay x3. At the time it was also claimed that they'd eventually also be released individually. Well, if this little blurb at musictap.net is to believed, then we'll see the individual packages on May 1st; the same day Snakes & Arrows is to be released. The blurb states that Mercury Records have three Rush DVDs coming on May 1. The titles are Exit...Stage Left, Grace Under Pressure, and A Show of Hands. The Exit ... Stage Left DVD is even listed on Amazon now - but no release date is given. Thanks to Don for the news.

Drumhead Magazine talks to Matt Scannell about Neil Peart

Power Windows is reporting that this month's issue of Drumhead Magazine contains an interview with Matt Scannell of Vertical Horizon where he discusses the story of his friendship with Neil Peart. From Power Windows:

... The article goes into detail of how Vertical Horizon was influenced by Rush, and Scannell also shares the story of his friendship with Neil Peart. Apparently Neil was in Texas selling his BMW car to a lady at a BMW dealership; her husband was Matt Scanelli, who was also present and recognized Peart. They hit it off and became good friends. ...

This past summer Neil Peart played drums on 3 songs for the next Vertical Horizon album, which Neil discussed in this news entry from his website. No news yet on when these songs will be released.

Rush makes list of Greatest Bands of All Time

Last month I reported that Cleveland's 98.5 WNCX was running a contest to determine the Greatest Bands of All Time. They've been announcing the results this past week and yesterday revealed that Rush came in at #11. Thanks to reader Tommy O for the news.

Rush US mobile list
10:31PM EST | link | comments (15) |

UPDATE - 3/17@11:16AM: I'm also hearing that Far Cry ringtones are now available for Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile users.

Rush.com was just recenlty updated with info regarding their new US mobile list. Simply text RUSH to 50505 to sign up for the RUSH mobile alert list. You can also send them your zip code to receive area-specific alerts. Very cool idea. Thanks to reader Arthur for the heads up.

Far Cry review from the Buffalo News
5:05PM EST | link | comments (36) |

[A New Rush]

Buffalo News Pop Music Critic Jeff Miers just gave one of the first Far Cry reviews from a major newspaper on his Miers on Music blog... and it's a good one. If you get a chance, go leave a comment on his blog and give him some props. Here's the review:

The first single from the forthcoming Rush album goes to radio today.

"Far Cry" is a multi-layered, ambitious bit of prog-rock with nicely stacked vocal harmonies and - as usual - some absolutely killer dynamic interplay between Geddy Lee, Neil Peart and Alex Lifeson. The tune begins and ends with some sinister stop-time riffing, leading to a suspended guitar chord that sounds an awful lot like the one that heralds the beginning of the band's 1977 epic "Hemispheres." (I'll have to check that.)

If "Far Cry" offers any indication, "Snakes & Arrows," the band's new album, due May 1st, is going to be a big, bold, technicolor progressive rock effort. There's also a strong rumor afoot concerning a mid-summer Buffalo gig for the band. Stay tuned.

Hear "Far Cry" at www.rush.com, and let me know what you think.

So go let him know... I know you guys are opinionated. We'll scare the hell out of him with all our comments. :)

Updates and other random Rush stuff
10:40AM EST | link | comments (35) |

UPDATE - 3/16@1:41PM: Utah! Energy Solutions Arena Usana Amphitheater in Salt Lake City on Friday, July 27th (Friday). Not confirmed of course - but none of these are really.

My Friday updates are fast becoming a weekly tradition at rushisaband.com. I think it's a good idea so I'll continue the tradition. It's a good way to report any minor Rush-related news that may have slipped under the radar and to just summarize the week's happenings. A lot went on this week so there's a lot to summarize.

At the top of the list is Monday's pre-release of Far Cry on Rush.com. If you've been hiding under a rock for the last week and haven't heard it yet, then go give it a listen - it rocks. It is also available for purchase on most music sites including Napster, Sony Connect, Real.com , iTunes Canada and finally ... iTunes US (thanks to reader Gary M for the heads up). So if you are able and so inclined go purchase a copy if for no other reason than to support Rush. You also will want to check out these pics of the Far Cry single hard copy given to radio stations.

Geddy Lee is involved with an ESPN promotion for fantasy baseball and gave 2 interviews related to it; one video interview and one print interview (where he says that the new album is best work we have ever done). The promo involves the creation of a prog/glam rock band called Iron Diamond featured in this commercial and on this MySpace page.

And of course there's the upcoming tour. I've been posting any rumored dates that I hear about and here's the list of (all unconfirmed as of right now) dates I have.

In other news, you only have a few hours left to purchase your very own Leggo Geddy action figure on eBay. Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of the release of Bob and Doug McKenzie's Great White North album where Geddy performed on the track Take Off. Don't forget to vote for Rush in 97 Rock's March Bandness competition. 29 Years ago today, the Archives compilation package which combined Rush's first three albums, was released. Tomorrow marks the 27th anniversary of Permanent Waves being certified Gold. Happy Friday everybody! It's a great time to be a Rush fan.

Tour Date Updates; opening date moved, western dates including Red Rocks
8:43PM EST | link | comments (63) |

Rush at Red RocksUPDATE - 3/16@1:38PM: Utah! Energy Solutions Arena Usana Amphitheater in Salt Lake City on Friday, July 27th (Friday). Not confirmed of course - but none of these are really.

My tour date updates thread from 2 days ago was starting to get very cluttered with updates so I thought I should start a new one. A lot has happened in the last 2 days. The big news is the moving of opening night from the Starwood Amphitheater in Nashville (which was recently bought and closed down recently) to the HiFi Buys Amphitheater in Atlanta on June 13th. The Atlanta date was originally scheduled for June 18th but since that is now open it looks like they'll be playing 2 dates in North Carolina; one in Charlotte on the 19th and one at Walnut Creek in Raleigh around the same day (no exact date yet).

In addition to the opening night change, several shows out west have been announced and/or rumored. They are Las Vegas on July 28th; Marysville, CA on August 4th;
Morrison, CO (at Red Rocks) on August 8th (just announced on ticketmaster); and Dallas on August 10th.

There's also a rumor that they'll celebrate Neil Peart's 55th birthday by playing the John Labatt Centre in London, ON on September 12th.

As far as Europe goes, we have 2 German dates now; October 19th in Oberhausen and October 21st in Mannheim.

Here's the updated summary list. I'm sure that about 2 seconds after I post this I'll hear of another update. :)

Jun. 13 - Atlanta, GA @ HiFi Buys Amphitheater
Jun. 15 - West Palm Beach, FL @ Sound Advice Amphitheater
Jun. 16 - Tampa, FL @ Ford Amphitheater @ Florida State Fairgrounds
Jun. 19 - Charlotte, NC @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheater
Jun. 27 - Mansfield, MA @ Tweeter Center
Jun. 29 - Scranton PA @ Montage Mountain
Jun. 30 - Saratoga Springs, NY @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center
Jul. 02 - Wantagh, NY @ Jones Beach Amphitheater
Jul. 04 - Darien Lake, NY @ Six Flags
Jul. 07 - Homdel, NJ @ PNC Arts Center
Jul. 09 - Uncasville, CT @ Mohegan Sun Arena
Jul. 27 - Salt Lake City, UT @ Usana Amphitheater
Jul. 28 - Las Vegas, NV @ MGM Grand Garden Arena
Aug. 04 - Marysville, Ca @ Sleep Train Amphitheater
Aug. 08 - Morrison, CO @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Far Cry hard copy pics
4:20PM EST | link | comments (41) |

UPDATE - 3/16@9:58AM: Far Cry is finally available on iTunes US. Thanks to reader Gary M for the heads up.

Thanks to Rushgoober and Grizz over at Counterparts, we have some cool pics of an actual cd hard copy of the Far Cry single. Rushgoober has a radio show and was able to obtain a copy. Grizz was babysitting the copy while Rushgoober was at work and had this to say about it:

... I can't play it for you, but I can say that it sounds even better than the really good mp3 I have on a disc. Extreme clarity! Thank Ged this recording was not fucked up like VT was.

Anyway, I love this song. I've probably heard it 100 times already, and am showing no sign of getting tired of it. Even Rushgoober loves it, and it's rare for him to like anything that's been recorded over the last couple of decades. ...

I like (dare I say love?) it too. Also notice that there definitely is a shorter radio edit as can be seen in the third image. The radio edit runs in at 4:34 while the album version is 5:21. Another new bit of info; it was mastered by Brian "Big Bass" Gardner. This is really cool.

eBay celebrity benefit auction will include items from Neil Peart
9:51AM EST | link | comments (11) |

[Rock memorabilia auction to benefit kids]

Mark Petrocelli is the national salesman for Houston-based drumstick company Pro-Mark, who supplies Neil Peart with drumsticks. A high school classmate of his, Paula (Lockhart) Lanz, was tragically murdered early last month by her estranged husband leaving her two children, ages 2 and 5, without a caretaker. Mrs. Lanz's highschool class set up a fund for the children and Mr. Petrocelli decided to use his industry connections to help out by organizing an online celebrity auction. The auction will take place on eBay.com starting March 16 (tomorrow) and running through the 26th. The auction can be located by going to eBay, clicking the advance search button and typing in SMPMUSIC04 to the find by seller field (nothing is currently up - items should appear starting tomorrow). The auction will include memorabilia from current and former members of several well-known rock acts including Neil Peart. Donations can also be made at any branch or sent to: Lanz Children Fund, c/o PNC Bank, U.S. Steel Tower, 600 Grant St., Pittsburgh 15219. Thanks to reader D for the heads up.

March Bandness - Vote for Rush!
7:35AM EST | link | comments (12) |

[97 Rock's March Bandness]

It's on! Every year, several radio stations throughout the country celebrate March Madness by sponsoring what's usually called a March Bandness. Modeling the brackets in the NCAA tournament, they pit classic rock bands against eachother. Rush usually fairs pretty well in these competitions. One of the more popular contests is sponsored by Buffalo's 97 Rock. Rush is up against fellow Canadians The Guess Who in the first round this year. Another great band ... but guess who's going to win? :) Go vote!

Tour Date Updates
9:47AM EST | link | comments (81) |

UPDATE - 3/15@8:20PM: Another show out west. This one just got listed on ticketmaster.com's Rush page. It's at the infamous Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO on August 8th. It has a showtime of 8PM and lists tickets as going on sale on Saturday, March 31st at 10AM. Let's hope this one stays up for a while and doesn't get yanked down like the Cincinnati show. Thanks to reader Andy for the news. This post is really getting cluttered with updates... I'll probably have to start a new one.

UPDATE - 3/15@4:55PM: Another rumored date; Smirnoff Music Center in Dallas, TX on August 10th.

UPDATE - 3/15@9:29AM: Another one. These are coming in faster than I can keep up! Reader Redstar Rushnut has a source at Live Nation and he's been informed that Rush will play the Sleep Train Amphitheater in Marysville, CA on August 4th.

UPDATE - 3/14@10:56PM: They just keep coming. Now zidaneisabutthead over at Counterparts is claiming that they'll be playing the John Labatt Centre in London, ON on September 12th - which happens to be Neil Peart's 55th birthday!

UPDATE - 3/14@10:27PM: Finally some news on the opening date for the tour. In case you didn't know, the Starwood in Nashville where the tour was originally intended to open was bought and closed down recently. There was a lot of speculation as to whether the tour would still open in Nashville or somewhere else. Well, it won't be in Nashville. It'll still be on June 13th but in Atlanta instead. Atlanta was originally going to be on the 18th, so now the 18th is open. How this'll affect other June dates is unclear. I'd originally heard this earlier today but hadn't enough details to feel comfortable posting it. Then the ever-helpful and talented MitA confirmed the info on the Counterparts board.

UPDATE - 3/14@9:07PM: The waters are muddying a bit. I hear a rumor that Raleigh, NC is now on the board for a show at Walnut Creek in late June - possibly replacing the Charlotte show. And I finally have some news of the western leg; Las Vegas at the MGM Grand on Saturday, July 28th with more western US dates in August.

UPDATE - 3/14@7:59PM: I think I'm going to have to nix the Camden show at the Tweeter Center from the list for now. I've heard it from enough people that this one is bogus. It was announced on a Philly radio station and it looks like the DJ was misinformed somehow. The date of August 4th was the very same date that they played there on the R30 tour - so it's likely that there was some confusion related to that. If they play Camden it will most likely be in late June with the other East Coast dates.

UPDATE - 3/14@12:17PM: Reader Claudia pointed me to this site which lists 2 more dates in Germany; October 19th in Oberhausen at the Arena and October 21st in Mannheim at the SAP-Arena.

I've been getting a few more unconfirmed dates from people. I mentioned them all in my Tour Dates open thread post but I thought I'd bring them to the top of the fold. Some of the newer dates (since Monday) are the Montage Mountain in Scranton PA on June 29th (I got this from someone who works for one of the major sponsors of the venue); SECC Arena in Glasgow, UK on October 3rd; and Newcastle Metro Arena in the UK on October 5th. Here's my summary list so far. Please let us all know if you hear about any more. Hopefully Rush.com will have some dates for us by next week too.

Jun. 13 - Nashville, TN @ Starwood Amphitheater
Jun. 13 - Atlanta, GA @ HiFi Buys Amphitheater
Jun. 15 - West Palm Beach, FL @ Sound Advice Amphitheater

New Geddy Lee interview at ESPN.com
7:27AM EST | link | comments (23) |

[Celebrity Lounge: Geddy Lee]

There's a new print interview with Geddy Lee up on ESPN.com. This is a different interview than the video interview with Matthew Berry that I posted about last week. Geddy talks mostly about his love of baseball - particularly his fantasy baseball league - and how it plays a major role in his life. He talks a little about Rush too:

... Lee is ready to hit the road again this year in support of Rush's newest album, "Snakes & Arrows" set for release on May 1. The band's newest single, "Far Cry" can be heard at www.rush.com. Lee said that the album was strengthened by producer Nick Raskulinecz after he and guitarist Alex Lifeson laid the groundwork.

"Alex and I wrote some of the songs in my home studio and, along with Neil, things started coming together," Lee said. "The songs on this album are very powerful and very positive. I think it's the best work we have ever done. And that says a lot to still be excited about what I am doing after more than 30 years. This material is really classic Rush."

Lee is excited to get back on the road because of the band's great relationship with its fanbase. Rush has long been known for having a very loyal following. "Our fans are amazing," Lee said. Rush's music has often taken different directions over the years, yet their popularity has not waned. "We have a certain repertoire with our fans that I really appreciate. They have given us the freedom to follow our creative urges, and when we kept experimenting, they were there for us at every turn. That is rare."...

So Geddy thinks Snakes & Arrows is the best work they've ever done?! Wow. I can't wait to hear this album. Thanks to reader Ty S for the link.

Far Cry on iTunes CanadaUPDATE - 3/16@9:58AM: Far Cry is finally available on iTunes US. Thanks to reader Gary M for the heads up.

UPDATE - 3/14@1:45PM: Reader batperez just let us know in the comments that Far Cry is now available on Real.com at this link.

UPDATE - 3/14@9:54AM: Bug iTunes US here.

UPDATE - 3/14@9:27AM: According to a couple of the comments it's up on Napster. Still no word on iTunes outside of Canada though.

Far Cry is now available for download on iTunes in Canada. I'm not sure about the US and elsewhere though. It's even one of the features on their homepage. So buy a copy if you are able and so inclined - if for no other reason than to support the band. And if you haven't heard it yet - where the hell have you been?! ;) Go to Rush.com and give it a listen. Thanks to reader Andy G for the heads up.

Snakes and Arrows album cover confirmed?
2:25PM EST | link | comments (63) |

Snakes & Arrows album coverOver the weekend, a German site posted an image of what they claimed to be the Snakes & Arrows album cover. This one - unlike a previous image obtained from the Snakes & Arrows sell sheet - was very well-received by fans. There's some more evidence now that this is indeed the album cover. Andrew of the Q107 Rock Report claims to have seen the album cover at the world premier listening party for the album, and just verified the image. Details here. Thanks to readers Scott T and Rick M for the heads up.

Geddy Lee ESPN side project: glam/prog rock band Iron Diamond
9:50AM EST | link | comments (5) |

The ESPN commercial featuring Geddy Lee that I first mentioned a couple weeks back has been airing regularly and I pointed you to the YouTube link over the weekend. With all the hullabaloo of the last couple days I didn't get a chance to post many details about the commercial - which is for fantasy baseball on ESPN. It features the ESPN crew including John Kruk and Peter Gammons along with several special guests including Geddy Lee performing as the glam/progressive rock band Iron Diamond. The song played is called Guide Me Master. The band even has a MySpace page which has a lot of great photos and the commercial posted. For those of you who don't have access to MySpace I've posted a few of the pics. The band members are as follows:

John Kruk: lead vocals, ESPN Baseball Tonight Cohost
Peter Gammons: vocals, guitar, ESPN Baseball Tonight Cohost, writer
Bronson Arroyo: vocals, guitar, 2006 MLB All-Star Pitcher
Geddy Lee: vocals, bass, Rush frontman, fantasy baseball genius
Gary Sheffield: drums, MLB slugger with 455 career HR's and counting
Joe Borowski: keytar, closer, 2006 Comeback Player of the Year Finalist
Jennie Finch: vocals, ESPN Fantasy Analyst, Olympic Gold Medalist
Matthew Berry: vocals, Senior Director of Fantasy for ESPN.com
Eric Karabell: vocals, ESPN Fantasy Analyst, ESPN Radio Host
Buster Olney: vocals, ESPN the Magazine Senior Writer, NY Times'

There's also a great interview with Geddy where he talks fantasy baseball up at ESPN.com here. Thanks to reader Xanagirl for pointing me to the MySpace page.

Rush's snubbing by the Rock Hall discussed in recent article
7:27AM EST | link | comments (46) |

Rush and the Rock Hall[Dispute rocks the hall]

My hometown NBC station, WKYC, had an article up yesterday discussing the controversy around this year's inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This year's inductees include R.E.M, The Ronettes, Van Halen, Patti Smith and Grandmaster Flash. The induction ceremony took place last night and was broadcast live for the first time. The article not only discusses this year's crop of inductees but goes on to talk about the many artists, such as Rush, that have been overlooked by the Rock Hall over the years and questions the criteria for induction. It's a very good article. Here's the bit about Rush:

... While not a fan of pioneering prog and glam acts snubbed by the hall, New York writer Roger Wade considers their importance and influence undeniable "to all but the most hard-headed music history revisionists."

He's referring to the hall's nominating committee members, "who are finally able to right the wrongs made by the buying public," he suggests with undisguised sarcasm.

"They reflect rock history through their own prism of 'how it should have been.' I've never owned a Rush album, and I've long harbored an actual dislike for both Kiss and its army. . As both a musician and an avid record buyer starting in the early '80s, my allegiances were firmly in the punk, new wave, and alternative camps and against the 'dinosaur rock' of Rush and Kiss, but even I'm willing to admit both were wildly popular and hugely influential among fans as well as my fellow musicians."

The Kiss-off and other examples of the hall's snobbery hurt rather than enhance its credibility, he says.

"This is supposed to be a hall of fame, and denying both the fame and influence of Rush and Kiss makes the institution look ridiculous," says Wade, 42. "If they renamed the place Rock and Roll Hall of Artists You Should Have Liked More Than the Ones You Actually Did, I would not begrudge them these exclusions." ...

Well said. Rush, long snubbed by the Hall, recently made the Rock Hall's Definitive 200 album list; 2112 was #198 on the list.

Thanks to reader D for the pointing me to the article.

Tour dates open thread
12:37PM EST | link | comments (66) |

UPDATE - 3/13@10:45PM: Got another one. The Montage Mountain in Scranton PA on June 29th. I got this from someone who works for one of the major sponsors of the venue.

UPDATE - 3/13@3:51PM: Reader Paul has heard a rumor that Rush will play the Newcastle Metro Arena in the UK on October 5th. That would certainly jibe with the rumored date of October 3rd at the SECC Arena in Glasgow.

UPDATE - 3/13@9:39AM: Reader Patrick tells me that Rush will play the SECC Arena in Glasgow, UK on October 3rd. Cool.

UPDATE - 3/13@7:05AM: It looks like the rumor of the tour date announcement being pushed back was true. No official tour date announcement has been made as of the moment. I guess we'll have to wait. I'll continue to let you know of any more dates I hear about in separate posts.

UPDATE - 3/12@5:50PM: Hmm. The ticketmaster Rush page no longer has the Cincinnati date up. No idea why. I guess I'll place it back in the unconfirmed column for now. Thanks for the comments guys!

Last week I posted about how tour dates would be announced on Rush.com today. So far - no tour dates (although the new site looks cool). The site just says Tour dates coming sssssoon!. I've also heard a rumor that the Rush.com tour dates announcement has been pushed back a week - although I can't confirm that. Either way, some new dates are trickling in from different sources. Ticketmaster.com's Rush page is listing a date of September 1st for a show at the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, OH. Show starts at 7:30PM and tickets go on sale April 14th! So I think we can safely say that this date is confirmed too. Thanks to everybody who sent me this link. Mike from Philly is also reporting that Rush will play the Tweeter Center in Philadelphia on August 4th. I've also heard that they'll play Ottawa this fall but not sure of a specific date.

Here's the list of dates I have so far. I'll be updating it throughout the day as we learn more:

Jun. 13 - Nashville, TN @ Starwood Amphitheater (??) see here
Jun. 15 - West Palm Beach, FL @ Sound Advice Amphitheater

THREE instrumentals on Snakes and Arrows?
12:05PM EST | link | comments (76) |

UPDATE - 3/12@5:48PM: I have it from a higher power that there are only 2 - as we all had originally been hearing. :(

Andrew of Toronto's Q107 Rock Report posted the following message this morning:

... I've taken down the original picture I had up here because it wasn't the actual cover. I had a chance to see it this weekend at the World Premier Listening Party for "Snakes and Arrows" - as soon as I get a copy of the cover I'll put it up.

In the meantime, I heard six tracks from the new album. The room was kind of noisy so I can't tell you too much, though I've been able to spend some time with new single "Far Cry", which has an excellent chorus, chords that remind me of classic 70's Rush, and a solid groove, with enough drums to keep me in air percussion heaven. My favourite line - "one day I feel like I'm ahead of the wheel, and the next it's rolling over me" - brilliant.

The other song that really stood out was "Malignant Narcissim", one of three instrumentals on the album and one that makes Alex's head spin just thinking about it. I believe this one ran for under 5 minutes, so it's not a "La Villa"-length epic, more line with a "YYZ" or "Where's My Thing?".

Tour dates are coming soon. In the meantime, the Mighty Q is spinning "Far Cry" and we'd love to know what you think of the tune. Here's a link to Rush.com where it's being streamed as we speak. Go there, take a listen, and then come back and give us your opinion.

*gasp* ... 3 instrumentals. I can't wait.

Far Cry open thread
11:33PM EST | link | comments (536) |

UPDATE - 3/12@9:04PM: This is nuts. I'm having trouble keeping up. But it's fun. :)

Looks like Rush.com took down the clip for a little while in order to swap out the Flash with a version using an encrypted mp3. So the direct link to the mp3 file no longer works. Not a big deal though - the file is all over the place. I'm taking my snazzy little player away for now just because I have nowhere I can host the file that can handle the traffic. Plus there's really no need at this point. Just listen to it at Rush.com or grab a copy from one of the message boards like Counterparts... or just ask somebody here to email you a copy.

According to many readers, several radio stations seem to be playing a shortened version of the song. I can't vouch for that but I've heard it from enough people to think it could be true. Whether this is a truncated version or an altogether different version (or a mass delusion) is unknown at this time. :)

There was a poll up on Q107's website with some very interesting results.

I know I'm forgetting something else... I'll think of it later. Oh yeah - and be nice to Nick.

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 3/12@11:53AM: Alright... not much more to be said here. I've finally had some time to sit back and attempt to digest all this. Wow. Comments are pouring into this thread faster than I can keep up. I also appreciate all the emails. Far Cry is all over the net and is now in rotation on several radio stations. There's even this homemade video for the song up on YouTube. If you haven't had a chance to check out the revamped Rush.com then do so. It's a vast improvement over the old one and there's a great little gallery of pics from in the studio. No tour dates yet though. More on that later.

*** PLAYER REMOVED FOR NOW ***

UPDATE - 3/12@6:43AM: Wow. Rush completely trumped everybody with how they released this. Well played! For anyone who hasn't already downloaded the mp3 directly from Rush.com, the file is here. Or, if you prefer, use my snazzy little player below. New Rush! Wooohooo!!

UPDATE - 3/12@6:24AM: I guess I should have stayed up a little later. Go to Rush.com! It's there - the whole song... along with a completely revamped site. Very cool. Rush is really doing a stand-up job of leveraging the internet for this album. This song rocks!

Tomorrow is the big day. We get our first taste of a complete new Rush song in 5 years. We heard the 15-second clip ... then we heard the 45-second clip ... then we merged the two! Now ... the whole thing!! Stations are supposed to be able to obtain the song at 6AM. Soon after this the bootleg copies will no doubt appear and spread like wildfire throughout the net. This thread is here for the sole purpose of tracking the release of the song throughout the day. If you hear the song, let us know where you heard it and what your thoughts are. I'll be updating this post throughout the day too. It's gonna be a fun ride.

March 8th came and went last week ... and with all the excitement of the last few days this bit of news fell under the radar. The ceremony took place in Toronto this past Thursday and several pictures of the event were made available by The Canadian Music Scene including one of Rush congratulating Ray via video. You can check out all the pics here. There's also this pic of Geddy and Alex arriving at the CMIs floating around the net. Which is a little confusing to me since they congratulated Ray via video. Maybe they were only able to attend a portion of the event and couldn't make it for the part where Ray was inducted? Not sure. If anyone can shed some light, let me know.

More Snakes & Arrows album art?
1:00PM EST | link | comments (85) |

Snakes & Arrows album coverUPDATE - 3/10@1:32PM: And here's a rough translation of the text on the German site where the image came from. It looks like Germany, where albums are released on Friday (thanks John E), will get the album a few days earlier than the US.

The release date for the new Rush album for our degree of latitude has been revealed. Recorded last fall and produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Velvet Revolver), the album is due out on the 27th of April. The planned cover is already online (see right).

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 3/10@1:08PM: Actually, John E seems to have put this in the comments before anybody else. I got a lot of emails about it too. Thanks for helping out everybody! I appreciate it.

I like this one. It comes from this German site and although I can't verify the source it looks real to me - very Hugh Syme-ish. Thanks to reader Shane for the news.

Geddy Lee interviewESPN has a nice little interview with Geddy Lee up on their site where he talks fantasy baseball with Matthew Berry. On a related note, a couple weeks ago I let you know that Geddy and several baseball players had filmed a commercial for ESPN. The commercial recently aired and is now online (thanks to Pete for the heads up). You can check it out here.

Far Cry promo image ... longer clip coming? 45-second clip!
4:25PM EST | link | comments (341) |

UPDATE - 3/11@11:08PM: Did Nick Raskulinecz really post comments in this thread!?! Well, today at a little after 1PM someone claiming to be him did. At first I thought... no way. I'd known for some time that if you google Nick Raskulinecz the first site that comes up is this one. So I would not be surprised at all if he at least knew of the site and perhaps visited occasionally. But put a comment here? Doubtful. But now... I'm about 99% sure it was him. I'll let you make your own decision. First read the comments on this post starting with comment #226. Then also read this post at Counterparts.

UPDATE - 3/10@2:11PM: I added a merged version of the 2 clips to the player too. Thanks to reader ironcladlou for making this available. Enjoy.

UPDATE - 3/10@9:23AM: Wow. I went out and had a few much-needed beers last night and come back to well over a hundred comments! Judging by 99% of the reactions I'd say the song is a hit. A couple updates... I added the short Far Cry clip to the player so you can play them side-by-side. Also, reader Kelly found the full epk (electronic press kit) for the promo on the FMQB site here. It's basically the promo image below with some promotional copy and a link to listen to the clip.

UPDATE - 3/9@4:52PM: Here it is!

Cygnus The God Of Balance over at The Rush Forum got his hands on this promo packet for Far Cry which included a 45-second clip of Far Cry... which we are all hoping he'll provide soon. I'll make it available as soon as I can. He'll apparently be able to download the entire song Monday morning. So it looks like we'll be hearing Far Cry in its full glory on Monday! Thanks to John E for the heads up.

Updates and other random Rush stuff
10:31AM EST | link | comments (47) |

I can safely say that yesterday was probably the most volatile and exhausting day on rushisaband.com since its inception. First, UK music site HMV posts artwork for Snakes & Arrows and causes quite a stir. As all this is happening, the complete track list for the album from the sell sheet surfaces online. Back to the artwork - I originally assume that the artwork is official. Reader John E convinces me otherwise ... then dives into some research of his own - and retracts his original assumption. Then the actual sell sheet surfaces - thus proving the validity of the track listing and album art. Not so fast! say many readers - they think it's a fake sell sheet. However, most of the naysayers -oddly enough - are the ones who dislike the artwork and track names. :) I personally don't think there's any reason to think the sell sheet is fake; other sites seem to agree too - although there's still a lot of doubt being expressed on all the various forums. Then to top it all off ... we find out that Geddy Lee had a cameo (albeit a brief one) on an episode of The Gilmore Girls! What a day. Whatever your opinion on the artwork/tracklisting, I think we can all agree that this is all pretty exciting ... and fun. :)

Ok then ... moving on. Tour dates! We have yet another unconfirmed date to report which you may have already heard about; Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. I also mentioned the June 30th date at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY in a post earlier this week in case you missed it. Here's the summary of all the (technically unconfirmed) dates so far:

Jun. 13 - Nashville, TN @ Starwood Amphitheater (??) see here
Jun. 15 - West Palm Beach, FL @ Sound Advice Amphitheater
Jun. 16 - Tampa, FL @ Ford Amphitheater @ Florida State Fairgrounds
Jun. 18 - Atlanta, GA @ HiFi Buys Amphitheater
Jun. 19 - Charlotte, NC @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheater
Jun. 27 - Mansfield, MA @ Tweeter Center
Jun. 30 - Saratoga Springs, NY @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center
Jul. 02 - Wantaugh, NY @ Jones Beach Amphitheater
Jul. 04 - Darien Lake, NY @ Six Flags
Jul. 07 - Homdel, NJ @ PNC Arts Center
Jul. 09 - Uncasville, CT @ Mohegan Sun Arena

The sell sheet also mentioned a 48-date tour which I'm assuming is just the US/Canada, and we're supposed to get the full schedule this coming Tuesday.

Jazz trio The Bad Plus, which I mentioned in this post a couple weeks ago, will release their new album PROG on May 8th. You can pre-order it here. The album will contain a jazz version of Tom Sawyer.

Reader Stevie S uncovered a couple Rush references in the Jordan Sonnenblick book Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie . The first one is on page 12:

... Just then Brian chimed in (he had dropped a stick during "In the Mood" and may have been annoyed by the big applause after my solo). ...

And the second is one page 22:

... I put on the radio to WZZO, the rock station, and started playig drums on my legs along with the Rush song that was on. ...

Reader Matthew M sent me this link at Jalopnik.com which describes the Bertone Barchetta concept car; the description includes a dipshit 1980s prog-rock reference. :)

Geddy Lee apparently likes to hang out at the Academy Of Spherical Arts in Toronto.

In a recent interview with Dangle, Junior and Trudy from the cast of Reno 911 at Echo Online Rush gets a humorous mention:

In the new film, there seems to be a great deal of sexual tension between members of the Reno sheriff's department. Would you care to elaborate on this?

Dangle: "When you're constantly under the threat of death like we are, every minute we're on earth could be our last. Your hormones are cranked up to a really high state."

Junior: "When you're going into situations where you might be killed at any moment, chopped in the back by a meth head, your brain instinctively is saying 'mate, mate.'"

Dangle: "'... as quickly as you can.' And it must be, because if you look around, we're not all that attractive."

Junior: "Not a good looking bunch."

Trudy: "Mix that with sad, quiet desperation and you've got... "

Dangle: "You've got a recipe for frenching."

Junior: "Recipe for Frenching is playing in town tonight."

Dangle: "Yeah, they're the Rush cover band. Their Geddy Lee guy's very good. Their drummer's no Neil Peart. Are you going to ask right in front of her face what's been going on with me and Trudy? Trudy, if I can speak for Trudy, we have a love-hate relationship. She loves me and I hate her. Trudy was raised in a home... " (turns to Trudy) "Explain how you were raised."

Geddy Lee on The Gilmore Girls!?
6:47PM EST | link | comments (27) |

UPDATE - 3/8@7:46PM: I missed this before. There's a little video too. I also put up another pic.

Taking a break from all the album art and track listing for Snakes and Arrows stuff, I thought I'd move on and report some real Rush news. Geddy Lee has a cameo on an upcoming a recently aired (Feb. 27th) episode of The Gilmore Girls! Seriously. Talk about surreal. Apparently Geddy's daughter Kyla is a big fan of the show and well ... ah heck - I'll just let former Skid Row frontman and Gilmore Girls cast member (and Rush fan) Sebastion Bach tell the story. From his website:

"What an incredible experience it was filming the latest episode, 'Will You Be My Lorelai, Gilmore?', of the CW network show 'Gilmore Girls'. As I was getting ready to leave the hotel for the Warner Brothers lot, my phone rang and it was my stand-in on the show and good buddy Kerry Tobin. He said, 'Dude, you are not gonna beleive who is hanging out on the set today - Geddy Lee from RUSH!!' I said, 'He is not!!' But I knew to expect the unexpected on the show.

"During my five seasons on the 'Gilmore Girls', I have met and filmed episodes with Carole King, SONIC YOUTH, Madeline Albright, Sally Struthers, Micheal York, Grant Lee Philips, and many more eclectic musicians and actors from all across the spectrum of the entertainment industry.

"But Geddy Lee? My favorite singer/bass player ever in the history of the planet? Hanging out on the set, checking us out filming our scene? Could it be?!?

"Sure enough, when I get to the production office to rehearse the song we perform in the episode, there in the flesh is Mr. Geddy Lee and his beautiful daughter Kyla! Turns out Kyla has impeccable taste and never misses an episode of her favorite show, 'Gilmore Girls', right beside Dad who watches every one with her! Geddy told us that he was in L.A. listening to mixes of the new RUSH CD, and set up a tour of the WB lot with Kyla, who had a great time meeting the cast and watching us work. I said to Geddy, 'Well, hey ..... why don't you guys BE IN THE SHOW???' The opportunity of filming a scene with Geddy and Kyla was just too great for this RUSH fan to pass up! Geddy chuckled and said, 'Well, I don't know... we'll see.' I then proceeded to badger the producer of the show Helen Pai (whose name is the anagram HEP ALIEN is based upon), 'Hey can Geddy and Kyla be in our scene?' Helen, in all her awesome-ness, said, 'Sure I don't see why not!' Unbelievable!!! This was around 7 pm or so. We were not on call to shoot the scene for at least a couple of hours. Which meant that Geddy and Kyla would have to make the commitment to stay on the set until 2 or 3 in the morning, by the time the shot was lit and filmed from all angles of coverage. What troopers they were! We got to hang out and rap about anything and everything, all night, and for me the chance to 'pick Geddy's brain' for four or five hours or so was a night I will never forget!

"Coming from Canada and growing up in the 1970s, a truly surreal moment occured that evening. I got to introduce Sally Struthers to Geddy Lee! For me being a little kid who grew up on 'All In The Family' and RUSH, to somehow be the guy who introduces these two icons of Seventies culture was really quite mind-blowing! Geddy was very excited to meet Sally and even did a short Archie Bunker impersonation on the spot! He told me he was a huge fan of 'All in the Family' and you could tell that he truly dug meeting 'Gloria Bunker'!

"Some heroes you meet and you wish you never did. Then there are those that exceed your every expectation, set you at ease in their company, understand that you are freaking out in their presence but still are cool answering questions etc., that they have probably answered a thousand times! Geddy Lee was definitely the most coolest, humble and down-to-earth rock god I ever shot a drama/comedy with! Click over to www.myspace.com/hepalien for pics and video of this momenteous rock/pop/tv occasion! And look for Geddy and Kyla's cameo on the show.. but don't blink, you might miss it!"

Wow. This made me smile. I think we all need a story like this to help us fill the void until Far Cry and/or Snakes & Arrows gets released. :)

Official Snakes & Arrows sales sheet verifies cover art, track list
1:10PM EST | link | comments (118) |

UPDATE - 3/11@3:39PM: Amazon now also has the track list from the sell sheet up on their site (international sites too), adding to the mounting evidence that it's not fake. The UPC code also checks out.

UPDATE - 3/8@5:00PM: As many of you have pointed out this may very well not be (probably not actually) the official cover art. So just to clarify, I meant that the image itself is official as it came from the album sell sheet. Whether it'll be on the cover or used in the album sleeve or at all - I don't know. We'll find out eventually. Also, cygnus-x1.net has reported the following:

Eric from Power Windows reached out to Anthem regarding the cover art for Snakes & Arrows. He received the following response:

Q: "Is that the actual cover?"
A: "My lips are sealed. Like all Rush albums - but even more so on this one - the band is holding everything very close to their chests. There will not be advance copies except for a few watermarked ones that are 'personalized' - and if they get leaked, we know who leaked them. However those are only going to the major territories (like UK, Germany, etc.) and some very top shelf journalists."

There you have it. Thanks to Eric for sharing this news.

----- snip -----

UPDATE - 3/8@2:13PM: Here's the sell sheet pdf .

It's official. The cover art and track listing discussed in the last two posts are official. The sales sheet for the album put out by Anthem verifies the info. It also states that the first single "Far Cry" goes for adds at all rock radio formats on March 19th rather than March 13th. Now they did say all... so maybe select stations/outlets will get it on the 13th? No idea really. If somebody more familiar with how these things operate has anything to add, please do.

As far as the cover art goes reader John E - who originally convinced me it was bogus - did some diligent research and ended up refuting himself. He came up with the following info.

The "Snakes and Arrows" version of the ancient game of Karma, called "Leela" was actually brought to this country in 1969 by none other than Harish Johari.

That image is THE gameboard for Snakes and Arrows.
No wonder they used the image. There is no other.
The actual placement of the snakes on the board, along with the arrows have an individual meaning.

Here is the info that convinced me:

"Chutes and Ladders came to the western world from India in the days of British rule and has been popular ever since. Harish Johari, a native of northern India, brought to this country in 1969 two copies of a similar board game on which serpents and arrows serve for chutes and ladders. The playing field is a rectangular array of eight rows and nine columns, therefore, seventy two squares. Pilgrim's path moves back and forth across the board as it moves upward from bottom to top, from square one to square 72. Upon each square is a single Sanskrit word. Leela: The Game of Self-Knowledge[1], is a book in which Johari explains the significance of the position and sequence of the Sanskrit words. The playing board is included as an insert."

Very impressive. Kudos to John E for digging this up and also supplying me with the sell sheet. Below is a low-res image scan of the sell sheet:

Snakes and Arrows cover blown upUPDATE - 3/8@1:13PM: Not bogus after all. The cover art and track list are official. The sales sheet for the album is floating around the net and it verifies the info. See this post for the details.

UPDATE - 3/8@10:52AM: Bogus image? Reader John E finally convinced me that the image of the Snakes and Arrows gameboard appears to be plagarized from another image. Check out this side by side comparison and you be the judge. I'm not surprised if Hugh had used a rendering of the game board for the cover... but I would be surprised if he blatantly plagarized it. The question is - if bogus- who at HMV made this image and why?

The HMV site referred to yesterday which posted a partial track listing now also has cover art! It looks like they posted it just a few hours ago. It's a small version and difficult to make out details, but there you have it. It's interesting that they seem to have it up before everyone else - including all the official Rush sites. Thanks to reader Darren H for the heads up. Thanks to Reed Lover for supplying a blown-up version of the image for us.

Snakes & Arrows partial complete track listing
10:08AM EST | link | comments (88) |

UPDATE - 3/8@1:14PM: Verified. The track list is official. The sales sheet for the album is floating around the net and it verifies the info. See this post for the details.

UPDATE - 3/8@8:43AM: This comes in from reader Michael H. According to a poster on the Rush 2 Yahoo newsgroup here is the entire track listing:

1. Far Cry
2. Armor and Sword
3. Workin' Them Angels
4. The Larger Bowl
5. Spindrift
6. The Main Monkey Business
7. The Way The Wind Blows
8. Hope
9. Faithless
10. Bravest Face
11. Good News First
12. Malignant Narcissism
13. We Hold On

No source was provided, but this seems believable for several reasons. One, all the songs listed at the HMV site are included (as the last 6 songs). Two, Far Cry is on there. And three, Workin' Them Angels - which was referred to in Neil Peart's book Travelling Music is on there. I'm betting this is accurate. 13 tracks... very cool.

----- snip -----

I'm not sure exactly what to make of this. It could be legit... or it could be a mistake. UK online music store HMV has Snakes & Arrows available for pre-order ... and gives a track list. The list contains only 6 songs - none of which is Far Cry. From what we know so far, the album is supposed to have 11 or so tracks. So either this is a complete mistake or it's legit and just a partial listing. For what it's worth, here's the list:

1. Hope
2. Faithless
3. Bravest Face
4. Good News First
5. Malignant Narcissism
6. We Hold On

As I find out more about this information, I'll let you know. Thanks to reader John E for the heads up.

Rush's 2112 makes Rock Hall's Definitive 200 album list
6:37AM EST | link | comments (32) |

The National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recently announced that they will co-host, along with EMI Music Marketing, a special press conference today to introduce their Definitive 200 list; 200 classic albums and soundtracks selected by music retailers that should be in every music collection. The list was revealed yesterday - lo and behold ... Rush is actually on the list! Barely. Their 1976 prog masterpiece 2112 made the cut at number 198. Rush has a long history of being snubbed by the Rock Hall so this sort of comes as a surprise to me. Some of the albums on the list are ... let's say ... questionable, but what list isn't? Of course, if I had any say 2112 would be number 1. :)

You can check out the entire list here. Thanks to reader Dave for the heads up.

Tourdates coming March 12th
6:46PM EST | link | comments (21) |

UPDATE - 3/6@7:35PM: Reader Justin sent me this link from live nation which lists 2 tour dates for An Evening with Rush. One is at the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center in NY on July 4th. This one had been previously reported, but the other one we hadn't heard about yet; it's on June 30th at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY. Cool. I have a feeling that a lot of these dates will begin to trickle in in the upcoming days before the official announcement.

User Zeigler2112 at The Rush Chronicles board has a contact at Anthem and they claim that all tourdates will be announced via Rush.com this coming Monday, March 12th. I have reason to believe this source to be reliable and this jibes with the rumor that tickets are going on sale March 24th, so I'm fairly comfortable reporting it. I guess we'll find out Monday!

Possible Snakes & Arrows artwork teaser?
1:16PM EST | link | comments (32) |

A possible Snakes & Arrows artwork teaser surfaced over on The Rush Chronicles messageboard a few days ago. At first the general consensus was that it was fan-created, but after more scrutiny it looks likely to be legit. Digital Kid originally posted it in this thread and claimed that it came from high places. There's also this thread at the Counterparts board. You can be the judge and the jury. :)

Full transcript of Geddy Lee Revolver Magazine interview
9:24PM EST | link | comments (72) |

Geddy LeeEarlier this week Blabbermouth published a blurb from a recent Revolver magazine interview with Geddy Lee. A couple days later some scans of pics from the article became available. Now, thanks to MitA, we have a complete transcript! Here it is:

"It's hard to describe," said Lee. "It's big, it's bold, and I think it's some of the best work we've done in years. I'm really pleased with the quality of the songs, and there's lots of playing on it."

The upcoming CD promises to be the most organic-sounding RUSH effort in decades, having been influenced by their experience of making "Feedback", the band's 2004 EP of classic-rock covers.

"Playing those songs that we loved and grew up on, I think it helped us remember how sometimes it's the simplicity or the directness of an arrangement that really makes a great song," said Lee. "And the other thing is, we played all together in the studio for a lot of the 'Feedback' stuff. That's something that a lot of producers had been pushing us to do for a while but which we hadn't done in years. It was great to turn off the click and just play - you know, not worry so much about being so, quote, metronomic - and that definitely carried over into this record."

"... We wanted the bed tracks to have that sort of live attitude to them, and that totally went with Nick's thinking, as well".

In Rasculinecz, the band found not only an enthusiastic collaborator but also a serious taskmaster who wasn't at all intimidated by the musician's formidable chops. "Nick really pushed us-he was constantly saying things like, 'Make it more complicated!' Lee laughs.

"There's no point in hiring a producer who's not going to speak his mind, but it's a tall order to find someone who can hear Neil's playing, amazing as it is, and still say, 'Maybe you should try going in this direction...' It was a pleasure to be challenged. That's really what a band like us needs."

Rush and Rasulinecz are currently mixing the new album at L.A.'s Ocean Way Studios, but most of the tracking was done at Allaire Studios in New York's Catskill Mountains.

"It's an old manor house that was originally built by the Pitcairn family, who owned the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company," Lee explains. "It's on the top of this mountain with just breathtaking views of the Hudson Valley. Our original intention was only to spend about 12 days there, doing drums. But it's so beautiful there, and the rooms sounded so great, and they didn't have anyone coming in after us, so Nick was like, 'Hey, let's keep goin'!'"

Though Rush recorded at a number of residential studios during the Seventies and Eighties, these were the first "sleepover sessions" for the band in nearly two decades, and Lee admits he initially wasn't entirely keen on the idea. In fact, "I approached it with great trepidation," he laughs. "I love those guys dearly, but 24 hours a day with anybody is a bit much. But to be honest, we had a blast. We got so much accomplished in our five and a half weeks there, and I have to say that I can't remember a recording session that's been as enjoyable and as refreshingly creative as these sessions. There was just a vibe with this record were everyone wanted to be there all the time."

So ... more high praise of Nick Raskulinecz and more unbridled excitement. I can't wait! By the way, Snakes & Arrows is now available for pre-order!

Snakes & Arrows now available for pre-order

Rush's 19th studio album, Snakes & Arrows, is now available for pre-order through Amazon.com and other vendors. Amazon has it listed for $18.98. They also indicate that it will be released on May 1st as was originally announced (not pushed back to May 8th). In lieu of an actual album cover, I borrowed the generic #19 cover created and used by the Power Windows site.

Alex Lifeson - Garrison Guitars article[RUSH's Alex Lifeson Joins Garrison Players Roster]

Acoustic guitar manufacturer, Garrison Guitars, recently added Alex Lifeson to their Players Roster:

Alex Lifeson, internationally recognized guitar wizard from the band RUSH has officially joined Garrison's growing list of artists. RUSH's new album, Snakes and Arrows is due out on May 1st! According to Alex, Garrison Guitars and/or Octave Manolins are on 85% of the album and will be joining him on their international summer tour.

Alex comments, "It's been a year since I began using my Garrisons and I absolutely love these guitars. Beautiful workmanship, tight low end and smooth, silky top end, very clear tonality, dynamic response and comfortable to play, these instruments are at the forefront of my acoustic work both on record and stage."

For more information on Alex's Garrisons, visit our player section. For more information on RUSH and the new single "Far Cry", visit www.RUSH.com.

There's even talk of an Alex Lifeson Signature Series Garrison but you didn't here that from me. That's HUSH, HUSH and we don't want to start any rumours.

Thanks to RedSectorA for the heads up.

Updates and other random Rush stuff
5:20PM EST | link | comments (9) |

UPDATE - 3/2@9:30PM: Oops. I'd also meant to include this comic strip Rush-sighting that was pointed out to me by reader Mike H. For Better or For Worse is a comic strip that chronicles the lives of a fictitious Toronto-area suburban family and their friends. On the strip's website they have sections where each of the characters writes a monthly letter to the fans/readers. Mike Patterson's wife Deanna is apparently a Rush fan, specifically of the song Subdivisions, which she opines upon in her March newsletter:

... Southern Ontario suburbia can be a scary place, and I don't want my kids growing up in a densely-populated area with no place to play and only strip malls to break up the monotony. You know that really popular Rush song called Subdivisions? That was written by guys from Willowdale. They were talking about the Toronto suburbs. "Some will sell their dreams for small desires, Or lose the race to rats, Get caught in ticking traps". Mike has broken free from his commuter lifestyle, and we don't want our kids to grow up thinking that we have to be feeder mice for the big city economy. ...

--- snip ---

Time for some random Friday afternoon updates.

First off, the rumor that came out yesterday about Rush's upcoming tour being billed as a farewell tour has been debunked! JordanRud over at Counterparts called Anthem. They said it was totally bogus - it was just a rumor after all. Whew! I for one am very glad we can put this to rest. But let's not forget the other part of that rumor - tickets on sale March 24th! That part of it is much easier to swallow I'd say. This means that tour dates should be coming within the next couple weeks.

As I noted yesterday I have a new feature on the site; the Time Stand Still Rush calendar. It's over on the right side of the page under the Random Sample. If you don't see it, make sure to refresh/reload the site and it should appear. I've already been told that it has problems in FireFox 2.0 on Windows XP (thanks Scott). If you notice any other issues with it let me know. I'll probably be playing around with and tweaking it this weekend.

A month ago I reported that the theatrical release date for the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie, which features the vocal talents of Neil Peart, was announced as March 23. Looks like this date has been pushed back to April 13th according to the movie's website.

I found this little article at the Bucyrus Telegraph-Forum site. It's called What do music geeks do in the Internet era?. It mentions Rush of course, and it talks about how much the internet has changed things for the music fan; how rumors are debunked as quickly as they surface (we know all about that!) rather than lingering on for months (it talks about the infamous Neil has cancer rumor) and how easy it is to find music lyrics and obtain song samples. I know that I, and I assume a lot of other Rush fans, can relate to what's said. It's particularly poignant in light of the recent Rush rumors and their debunking. Anyhow, if you get a chance give it a read - I think you'll enjoy it.

Brooklyn-based musician Corn Mo was recently interviewed for the Gothamist. When asked What are some bands and songs that rock? he includes Rush's The Spirit of Radio. And when asked Do you have any fun stories of seeing concerts when younger? he answered as follows:

Peeing in a crowded bathroom at a Rush show. Strangers getting excited with each other because they played 2112. There was no line for the girl's bathroom.

And when asked Where did you find solace while growing up? he answered:

In my room, listening to Deep Purple, Van Halen, Judas Priest, The Scorpions, Jimi Hendrix, Rush, Kenny Rogers, and Abba.

I'm sure many of us can relate.

MSNBC.com ran an article today entitled Pump up the volume to bring on the burn where celebrities along with regular readers share their playlists that they use when working out. Rush's Earthshine is one of the songs mentioned. Thanks to reader Mike K for the heads up on this one.

I've added a few more bootleg videos to the site:

[Dreamline live from the Counterparts tour] This is yet another vid from the professionally-shot Counterparts concert bootleg called "A View From The Palace", that was filmed March 22, 1994 at The Palace of Auburn Hills. You can see several other vids from this same show here.

[Neil Peart Der Trommler drum solo live bootleg from R30 tour] This is a really nice bootleg of Neil's solo from the R30 tour.

[Between the Wheels live bootleg from R30 tour] This is from the R30 tour at the Evening News Arena in Manchester, England on 9/12/2004.

New feature; Time Stand Still Rush calendar
4:30PM EST | link | comments (28) |

If you look to your right, just under the Random Sample, you'll notice a new little feature on the site. I'm calling it the Time Stand Still Rush calendar. It's populated with upcoming release dates for Rush and Rush-related merchandise (such as the upcoming Porcupine Tree album that Lerxst plays on); tour dates (just unconfirmed ones for now); important dates in Rush history; and upcoming special Rush-related events (such as the Junos). For now, I'm just sticking it in the right hand column, but I may do more with this. Such as highlight the events for the current/upcoming days somehow - and create a separate page with a list of all events for the current month. I think this'll be a neat little addition to the site, especially with the upcoming tour (hopefully not a farewell tour). This is just a first iteration, so let me know what you think.

Tour rumors; tickets on sale March 24th, billed as farewell tour?!
2:45PM EST | link | comments (88) |

UPDATE - 3/2@1:45PM: Debunked! JordanRud over at Counterparts called Anthem. Not true. No farewell tour. Whew. This is why it's called a rumor.

These latest tour rumors come from the ever well-connected Power Windows over at the Counterparts site. There's good and bad news. Here's what he posted:

Just talked to a friend of mine who owns a record store here in Denver, and he said that his Ticketmaster rep told him that Rush tickets are going on sale Mar 24th, which means that the complete tourdates should be available soon.

The bad news is that the Ticketmaster rep told him that it is in fact being billed as the farewell tour....

Nothing official has been said yet of course...

So there you have it. Power Windows doesn't kid around (unless it's April Fool's Day) about stuff like this so I at least believe that this is exactly what his contact told him. Whether it's true or not, time will tell. And if the farewell thing is indeed true, then my feeling is that they'd continue recording new material but just not tour anymore. I'm sure you all have a lot to say too... so fire away!

New Rush in-studio pics
12:32AM EST | link | comments (23) |

Tuesday I posted an excerpt from a recent interview with Geddy Lee that appears in the current issue of Revolver magazine. iluvgeddy05 over at The Rush Forum has provided a couple scans of pics from the article. Both pics are of Rush in the studio at Allaire Studios in New York. Thanks to MitA for alerting me to these via the Counterparts board.
